The sounds of shoes squeaking on the court and basketballs dribbling echoed throughout the gym on Tuesday, Dec. 9, at 6pm, as the Lady Jags basketball team faced off against the Blanche Ely Tigers in a home game. After failing to secure the win and leaving with a 4-86 loss, the Lady Jags left the gym feeling defeated. However, they walked out with their heads held high, knowing what areas they needed to work on and improve for their next game against Cypress Bay High School.
Sophomore, power forward, and team captain, Soule Osborne comments, “I feel like we didn’t put our full effort into Tuesday night’s game. We practice and work really hard, and I know we could’ve played better than we did, but every game isn’t going to be the best, and we just need to move forward to focus and improve on the rest of the season.”
Although the players had their individual critiques on their personal performance, the Lady Jags wanted to focus on improving the bigger picture: the team.
“As a team, we need to communicate better, keep our energy consistent, and make quicker adjustments when the game shifts,” adds junior and guard Destiny Ortega. “We also need to stay positive and connected so we don’t let mistakes affect our effort.”
Even with the tension within the team after the loss, players still managed to hold themselves accountable and recognize their mistakes in Tuesday night’s game.
“I didn’t play to the best of my ability…” comments center and sophomore, Marai Osborne. “I think I need to improve on not getting into my head and playing with confidence.”
The Lady Jags took this loss as a wakeup call and as a learning opportunity on what they need to do for their future games. With these things in mind, Ortega mentions that the loss will “hopefully bring the team together, helping us bounce back stronger.”
“I’m feeling motivated and ready to bounce back. I know Cypress Bay is a strong team, but I’m confident that if we stay focused, communicate, and play together, we can compete at a much higher level than we did in our last game,” Ortega adds.
This loss will not remain as despairing but will only fuel the Lady Jags’ sparked fire in their hearts and their hunger to win. Although this was their first loss of the season, the Lady Jags will continue to roar through the season with the fresh taste of revenge on their tongue.
