Balancing athletics and academics is not easy, but for senior Caitlin Capiro, it has become part of her everyday routine. Between competing in water polo and swimming while also serving as Co-President of Science Olympiad and participating in Student Government Association (SGA), Capiro has become one of Charter’s most well-rounded student-athletes, being named Jaguar of the week.
“It means a lot to me because I have put so much effort into water polo and I feel so grateful to have been chosen for it,” says Capiro.
Capiro first got involved in water polo during eighth grade after a friend encouraged her to join. Although she says it was difficult at first, since many players on the team already had years of experience, she continued training. Eventually, she turned the sport into one of her favorite activities.
“It was super hard at first learning a new sport because everyone around me had been doing it since they were young,” says Capiro. “But as I trained more and more, it became one of my favorite extracurriculars.”
Since joining the Jaguars during her freshman year, Capiro has assisted the team in reaching many milestones. This season, the Jaguars earned second place at the annual Forza Stefano tournament for the first time in program history, something Capiro believes was one of her proudest moments because of how connected the team played together.
“I’m so proud of everything the team accomplished this year,” Capiro shares. “I think we all played in such a harmonious way and really reached a flow state.”
Outside of athletics, Capiro balances a demanding schedule filled with academics, leadership positions, and club water polo. Along with competing for the Jaguars, she serves as co-president of Science Olympiad and participates in SGA. She credits staying organized and writing down assignments, tests, and responsibilities as one of the biggest reasons she has been able to manage everything successfully.
“Writing down my assignments, tests, and everything I had to do helped me stay on top of things,” Capiro notes.
As graduation approaches, Capiro says she hopes to continue playing water polo in college while building new relationships with teammates and pursuing her long-term goal of becoming an optometrist.
“One of my goals is to continue playing water polo and hopefully create even more special bonds with my new teammates,” says Capiro. “Another goal is to become an optometrist in the future after college.”
