The Pembroke Pines Charter Jaguars boys’ volleyball team secured their back-to-back district champion title on Friday, April 24, after beating the McArthur Mustangs on their home court 3-0. This season, the Jaguars have been focusing on communication skills and relying on one another.
“We played for each other, stayed connected, and trusted one another on and off the court,” senior Gabriel Castro mentions.
The Jaguars came out strong with a seven-point run in the first set before the Mustangs scored their first point of the game. They did not give up and maintained this lead, winning the set 25-10.
In set two, the teams went back and forth, while the Mustangs were winning during the majority of it. The Jaguars gained back their momentum in the final moments and won it 25-20.
Finally, set three, it was time for these boys to either go big or go home. If the Jaguars were to win this, they would take home the trophy; because of this in mind, they were determined to bring home their second district trophy in a row. Leaving this set with a Jaguar victory of 25-19, being labeled district champions.
After the game-winning point was scored, the crowd erupted with cheers as the players ran on the court to celebrate with their teammates. Smiles, celebrations, and hugs filled the gym as reality set in and history was made.
“What helped our team’s success this season was our relationship. We are all great friends, and we practiced together for a long time, so when we are on the court, we have good chemistry,” comments sophomore Johnathan Rios.
Throughout the season, these boys have worked through obstacles, as they improved their communication and learned how to respond when games get tough. This showed most in game, especially when they needed a fast recovery after losing momentum in set two.
This game, however, highlights more than just a single victory; it represents what the Jaguars have faced this season. With the district title secured, they are now looking forward to the next round of the playoffs: regionals.
