During each of the five chiming sounds, the idea of leaving high school behind lingers in seniors’ minds. Family and loved ones surround them with a strong aura of support. Students wear the college they’re committed to while reminiscing on their past four years at PPCHS.
The famed Bell Ringing ceremony has been a Charter tradition for around 15 years and has stayed strong. The graduating class makes morning appointments to ring the bell in the front office of the campus and rub the Jaguar’s nose. Seniors often invite close family and friends to take in the moment of high school becoming a memory.
The ceremony is short and sweet, but it leaves an everlasting mark on the students who participate. Principal Bayer leads the tradition every year. Mr. Bayer begins by delivering a meaningful speech to the group of students and their loved ones. He begins with the history of the Bell Ringing ceremony, which originated in 2011, and its significance to the school.
Bayer’s impactful speech captures his appreciation for the graduating class. The words of inspiration towards each senior and their futures truly touched their hearts. Hearing the repeated words of encouragement and pride impacts the new adults moving on to college. Guidance is essential in times like this, where there is so much change that occurs so quickly.
After Bayer’s words of wisdom, each student is then called one by one in alphabetical order. With every student’s name that is called up, memories flash by, not only for the student, but even for the staff as well. Bittersweet emotion fills the air. During every tug on the rope attached to the bell, each senior faces those they love, and Bayer stands right beside them.
“To me, the ceremony represents stepping into the next chapter of life. It’s a chance to celebrate everyone’s future college plans and recognize all of the hard work that helped us get to this point and move on to the next chapter. Family and friends gather and cheer as you ring the bell five times, and it’s very meaningful,” says senior Sophia Peterseil.
With every ringing sound, everything starts to feel real. The idea of moving on to college and leaving four memorable years of high school behind is scarcely beautiful. After the fifth and final chime, smiles and cheering fill the space. Hearts are heavy, but there is a reassuring feeling for seniors sharing this moment with family and staff, knowing they have a strong support system in this season of change.
Senior Aiden Oscar comments, “I realized it’s time for me to embark on a new journey and appreciate what the school has offered me by preparing for my new journey.”
Following the Bell Ringing, there is one last step to the yearly tradition. Seniors then enter the front office, where they find the jaguar statue and rub its nose for good luck in their years following high school.
Students usually take many photos and videos to cherish these memories for the future. Each photo with a friend, staff member, or family member captures the essence of growing up. Especially in the Charter system, with its close-knit community, it can be tough to say goodbye to years long friendships. The annual Bell Ringing ceremonies are a meaningful way to symbolize the closing of an old chapter and also the beginning of a new one.
