From book to film, the release of Project Hail Mary has sparked interest in many. Showcasing the art of science through a story of friendship, the film captures how emotions of loneliness, confusion, and grief can shift into blessings.
The film centers around the main character, Ryland Grace, who forcefully flew to outer space in an effort to solve a global existential crisis. However, along the way, he lost his memories and crew.
While trying to get back in the right headspace, Grace discovered a friend with the same issue as him, named Rocky, an alien from a planet called Erid. After initially communicating through capstones, the two met, marking the start of a budding friendship.
Using technology to crack the language barrier, the duo formed a bond over their lost shipmates and societal pressures to fix the same threat that risked their people’s future.
Through many challenges together, they developed stable communication and found an enduring friendship. The film’s production helped convey such strong, heavy emotions through stunning visuals and music. This created an immersive experience as if viewers themselves were on the spaceship.
Sophomore Austen Chen highlights, “‘Project Hail Mary’ was a work of art, and the visuals were really good.”
Because “Project Hail Mary” is a sci-fi movie, many people have been comparing it to the famous “Interstellar” film. In both, the main characters must save their population, and to do so, they need to travel through outer space, no matter what it takes.
Grace and Joseph Cooper from “Interstellar” face similar emotions and experiences on their rockets. Although loneliness and sacrifices are part of the mission, they both learned how to communicate with someone special to them in unique ways. Cooper communicated with his daughter, Murphy, through a dimension called the tesseract, and Grace learned how to communicate with an unfamiliar species.
Even though one ending may have been more painful than the other, both films are praised for their incredible acting, visual effects, and soundtracks. This generation of movies has impacted people in many ways, with the meaning and purpose shown in these films.
“It was one of the best movies I have seen,” expresses sophomore Alexa Rodriguez, “I love the relationship between Grace and Rocky, [because] the feeling felt so raw and emotional.”
With stunning attention to detail and compelling storytelling ability, “Project Hail Mary” has surpassed $300 million at the global box office, making it Amazon MGM’s highest-grossing film and a movie worth watching.
