The crack of the bat and the rhythm of a new season have returned, bringing fresh expectations and unfinished business to the diamond. After finishing last season with a 12-15 record, the team entered the offseason determined to turn close losses into wins.
With a mix of experience, talent, and renewed focus, this season’s squad entered with one goal in mind: to compete, improve, and make a lasting statement from the very start.
The Lady Jags have already turned around their program this season, boasting a 13-6 record. They have secured victories over opponents like Monarch (11-0), Cypress Bay (10-8), and Archbishop McCarthy (10-3). They have also faced tough challenges in matchups against powerhouse schools like American Heritage (0-6) and Western (1-2).
From consistency at the plate to a more disciplined defense, the Lady Jags feel as if their transformation is undeniable.
“We gained a lot of competitive players this season, along with four new coaches, two who even played at the collegiate level, bringing their knowledge to help the team. However, as a team, we have been very close, and our bond is strong,” explains junior captain Destiney Ortega.
Every time they take the field, they claim to play with a level of confidence and execution that has become the hallmark of this year’s squad.
The blend of returning and new players has been making an impact this year. While upperclassmen have embraced their leadership roles, setting the tone on and off the field, younger players have stepped in and delivered meaningful performances. An example is freshman Brielle Martinez, who currently holds a recorded number of five runs and six hits.
“Being a freshman on varsity has been a challenge, but I see it as an opportunity to prove myself and get better every day,” Martinez shares.
This balance has helped create a deeper and more versatile lineup. Still, the team knows the job is far from finished. Despite the strong start, consistency remains a key focus as they continue to build toward their goals.
The next test for this team is coming up soon, with their away game against Coral Springs Charter on April 14 at 6:00 pm, a matchup that offers another opportunity to build momentum and continue proving that this season is different. With each game, the team is working to turn early success into a sustained run and to make sure last year’s lessons lead to this year’s results.
