It is the start of something new. Pembroke Pines Charter High School (PPCHS) provides many different sports programs for all students. Yet, this year, there has been a new addition to the athletics department: girls’ beach volleyball.
Beach volleyball is completely different from indoor volleyball, as it is played outside on the sand rather than on a court. Also, the rules between the two differ heavily.
One of the most important parts of indoor volleyball is that it consists of six players, while beach volleyball has pairs (two players) that make up a team.
The 2025-2026 Lady Jags beach volleyball team has officially become a sport this season, yet it is coming to an end soon. The team consists of 14 athletes, making seven pairs.
The athletes train more and more with their pair to help create a bond to play easier. Partners learning each other’s strengths and weaknesses allow growth and discipline for both players.
“Practice is always a good time with this group of girls. We have a balance of focus and having fun together, and I love it,” states junior Sophia Alan.
With the creation of a new team, that also means that there are new coaches. Adrienne Saunders and Ellie Madrigal were named the official coaches to teach and allow the girls to grow this season. Both women are Division II athletes at Barry University.
Throughout this season, coaches Saunders and Madrigal have been able to bond with their athletes and form a connection as mentors.
“Both coaches have made it so easy to enjoy the game but also stay disciplined. I am able to talk to them to talk about what I need to improve on without any judgment,” notes freshman Maya Suarez.
The Lady Jags have shown improvement in technique and understanding the basics of beach volleyball. Most of them have mainly played indoor volleyball. The transition from hardwood floor to sand has been a tough obstacle, yet they have shown willingness to learn.
Unfortunately, they have yet to win a game this season as it ends in late April. However, they hold their heads high since they believe that they will only be going up from here. The Lady Jags hope to grow the name of the beach volleyball program while representing their school.
