As the new season is underway, the Jaguars Water Polo team is diving into the spring season after a tiring preseason.
With returning players and new faces on the team, players’ primary focus varies, yet their overall goal is to be more united as a team than they were last year.
After the recent cold front, water polo players have spent countless hours in the pool practicing after school even through the freezing temperatures.
With the aim of having each strive for perfection and constant improvement, players’ new year resolution is to improve on self-goals and team efforts.
“[I want] to get more assists and make good passes,” notes sophomore Pedro Di Napoli. “The team seems more united than last year, and I believe that will allow us to win.”
Instead of emphasizing individual scoring alone, the Jaguars are planning on improving their communication and coordination in the pool.
The coaches have also reinforced the importance of supporting one another and working as a team. One of the most uplifting aspects of this season is that the Jaguars are hosting two home games for the first time ever in school history.
Giving students, teachers, and families a chance to watch the Jaguars water polo team without leaving campus.
After the almost sudden change of water polo being removed as a varsity sport during the fall, players are cherishing every moment. Attempting to showcase not only their skill but also their passion in the water.
Their first game of the season takes place at Nova High School’s pool as they take on South Broward High School on February 10; the girls’ game is @5pm and the boys’ game is @6pm.
“We’ve practiced so much already and have learned so many more skills than before,” says junior Mariella Plaza.
“Everyone is working hard to make sure the first game of the season is memorable and showcases why keeping this varsity sport was worth it.”
Each player admits to having a rocky season last year, yet this season, the underclassmen are stepping up as well as the seniors as they leave their mark at charter.
Though, as the season starts, the PPCHS Water Polo team hopes their training and unity will not only lead them to win but also impact their progress for the future.
“We’re going to do great this season; I think we [have learned] a lot, and [although] there’s always room for improvement, with practice we can get far,” sophomore Emanuel Zapata comments, “this year, our team is less hectic and offers everyone a chance to show their skills in the pool.”
