Music has always been one of the most important things in my life. There’s truly something so special about it that I can’t really put my finger on. Whether I’m listening to a happy, upbeat song or rhythm and blues, I never fail to be comforted by the lyrics of the artist.
Over the years, various artists have written songs that correlate with all aspects of my life; that’s what I love about it. Music is more than just beats and sounds; it creates a safe space for listeners like me.
Even in moments I don’t quite notice, music helps me calm down or even hype myself up. Before a game, playing music to drown out all the noise and focus on myself is all I need. Another instance is when I’m trying to study. Most people think that silence is the key to staying focused. However, putting my AirPods in and doing any work I have allows the words and ideas to flow easily.
Many of my loved ones know how important music is to me. Since I was a little girl, I would make videos of myself singing and dancing to different genres of songs. My mom even mentioned her theory about why I have this love for music: while pregnant with me, she would hold a cassette tape to her stomach so we could enjoy the song together, which makes me believe her theory, too.
I can go on and on about what I love about music, but there’s one thing I love most: the feeling behind my favorite songs means so much to me. Every playlist I have is a collection of songs that reflect my life.
Whether it’s a song I loved when I was little or music I just discovered, that specific song will always be associated with a time in my life that I’ll never forget. I think of music as a picture, but instead of capturing a memory and looking back on it, I remember the song I listened to at that time.
Music is also a love language in my life. Things like sharing music tastes with someone and recommending songs that a person would like mean a lot to me. I think about whether someone did that for me, for I would appreciate and cherish that certain song forever. I think it’s beautiful, and an act like that truly sticks with me.
I don’t think I could really describe the feeling and love I have when I hear music. It builds up emotions I didn’t think were really possible. People may think I’m dramatic about it, but without music, I would be a totally different person. There are just some things a person can’t imagine their life without, and music is one of mine.
