Since the release of the first four episodes, fans have started to notice a “romantic relationship” between Mike Wheeler and Will Byers. With the show taking place during a time period that is less accepting of homosexuality, Byers often struggles with embracing his true identity, feeling out of place in his surroundings. However, this season has captured Will’s newfound bravery in acknowledging his sexuality, showcasing the deeper connection shared between him and Mike.

Their relationship goes beyond friendship, demonstrating the subtle ways they support each other through danger and uncertainty. One instance is the flashback shown at the end of episode four. Pembroke Pines Charter High School sophomore Olivia Gonzalez comments, “When I was younger, I used to ship them. I haven’t seen season 5 yet, so I don’t know how to feel about it since I see [their relationship] is a big deal.”

On the other side of Hawkins, Vecna’s psychological games represent fear and control; he manipulates people’s memories and deepest fears to break down his victims. During interviews, cast members have discussed how Vecna’s victims respond to his mind games. They explain the careful planning behind each scene, strategically using Vecna’s body language and deep voice to inflict fear in the viewers.

Sophomore Huda Iqbal shares, “I do think Vecna is the scariest villain introduced because he’s behind everything in the upside down, and everything always leads back to him.”

With Vecna’s unbeatable power, theories about potential deaths have swarmed social media. Many fans believe that the series finale episode may include a major sacrifice. Some think Steve Harrington might make a heroic last stand, while others think Hopper, Eleven, or even a member of the original friend group could be in danger. Considering that Stranger Things has built a reputation on emotional plot twists, the finale is speculated to be equally devastating and meaningful.

Off-screen, fans have mostly enjoyed ‘growing up’ with the cast members. The actors of the original friend group from season one, Finn Wolfhard, Caleb McLaughlin, Gaten Matarazzo, Noah Schnapp, and Millie Bobby Brown began filming around the age of 12, and now end in their early 20s.   

Noah Schnapp’s growth in particular has been widely discussed. Playing Will, who struggles with identity, fear, and courage, Schnapp delivered multiple emotional performances throughout the show.
