New York City elects Zohran Mamdani as Mayor
On Nov. 4, Democratic politician Zohran Mamdani was elected mayor of New York City, defeating independent candidate Andrew Cuomo and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa. Mamdani’s election is a historic one, as he’s the city’s first South Asian or Muslim mayor elect.
Despite the fact that it’s just a mayoral race, Mamdani’s election could be a turning point for the Democratic party throughout the entire country. The mayor elect promises far more proactive policy than is typical for a standard Democrat, pledging to bring free transit and childcare to all New Yorkers, as well as improve affordable housing options and increase the minimum wage.
As a self-proclaimed democratic-socialist and a 34-year-old, Mamdani isn’t a typical big-city mayor. Should his candidacy in the USA’s biggest city prove successful, he could mark a shift to a younger, more leftist Democratic party in the rest of the country as well.
Masked thieves rob Louvre
On Oct. 19, a group of thieves stole eight pieces of precious, historical French jewelry from the Louvre in broad daylight. The masked robbers fled the famous museum on scooters. One of the thieves dropped a crown on their way out, but the group managed to escape from the museum successfully.
The group turned into a pop-culture sensation almost immediately, due to the cinematic fashion in which the heist was performed. People worldwide theorized about the heist, and even have written stories about the anonymous thieves and the planning of their operation.
Since the heist, four of the five robbers have been captured, with one still at large. The stolen items haven’t been recovered yet, and French authorities worry they were taken out of the country.
Trump goes on CBS for a sixty-minute interview
For the first time in five years, American president Donald Trump sat down for an interview with CBS News’s “60 Minutes” program. While a 90 minute interview was had, only 28 minutes were actually released to the public on tape. While on the show, Trump spent much of his time criticizing the former owners of the CBS network and questioning the legitimacy of the 2020 presidential election.
Not much in regard to policy or plans for the president was cleared up. However, he did discuss the current conflicts with Venezuela and his stance on the economy.
Prince Andrew loses his royal titles
On Oct. 30, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor of the British Royal Family was stripped of his titles. Formerly known as Prince Andrew, both the title of “Prince” and “His Royal Highness” were revoked from him by King Charles III over his relationship with deceased American billionaire and sex trafficker Jeffery Epstein.
Andrew had previously been subject to numerous sexual assault allegations, and was even sued by a woman named Virginia Guiffre over the matter, which was settled in a civil court. This time around, the former Prince was found guilty of associating with Epstein closely, even after having claimed that all contact was cut. The allegations proved too much, and the King promptly removed his titles. However, he still remains eighth in line to the British throne.
