Pembroke Pines Charter’s Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) wrapped up an exciting October with their annual spirit week. The event featured creative themes such as Mad Scientist Monday and Twin Tuesday. HOSA Spirit Week is used to celebrate the spirit of medicine, promote health care, and increase HOSA pride around the school.
The event was even more special because this year marks the 50th year that HOSA has been an organization. The overall theme for HOSA week this year was “champions of change,” with the weekday themes including: Mad Scientists Day, Twin Tuesday, Scrubs Day, Jersey Day, and Fake an Injury Day. Although seemingly just fun themes, there lies a deeper meaning behind them.
“For Tuesday’s theme, Twin Tuesday, the meaning of the theme was that champions lift each other up,” says Nusaybah Arif, the HOSA president. Sophomores Laura Liu and her twin, Logan Chiong, found a clever way to incorporate the medical field and the popular 67 meme. The pair wore matching T-shirts displaying an EKG line with a BPM of 67 above. Liu states, “I chose to do this costume because Logan is my twin and my best friend, so I wanted to do a costume with him.”
Other duos in the club decided to combine the medical field with some spooky spirit for Halloween this past Friday.
Freshman Trisha Dasari says, “My HOSA spirit week costume is a ghost that has a nurse on it, and I chose it because it’s really close to Halloween, and I wanted to wear something that’s spooky, but also medically related.”
Although students went all out for Twin Tuesday, they especially did for Mad Scientist Monday, with many wearing science-related gear and clothing to fit the theme, along with non-members of the club participating as well.
Students were given lab coats from friends and HOSA members, with the lab coats being passed around to different people throughout the school. Some students even brought fake gray and white wigs and mustaches to really get into character.
Members of the club did not fail to dress up for HOSA week this year. Even though the week is over, students can’t wait to participate and see what HOSA has in store for next year.
