Publix has found itself in deep controversy over its recent policy change allowing open carry in Florida stores. Customers and workers alike are deeply divided on this issue, with just as many people for it as there are against it.
This change comes after Florida declared laws against open carry unconstitutional, inviting citizens to carry a firearm on their hip. This has caused outrage among some people, with many saying they feel unsafe when around visible guns.
On the other hand, some shoppers comment that they feel much better when they can see the pistol, as it lets them know who to stay away from if they feel threatened. Others simply say that guns do not bother them.
From a Publix worker’s perspective, this change feels like a step in the wrong direction. I’ve encountered many passive-aggressive or just plain rude customers, and even some who have verbally abused me. These instances are customers being aggressive, but these situations change entirely if a gun is present and shown.
In any one of those situations, not only would I be scared for my safety, but I would also be cautious around them because it would affect my ability to think clearly. This would impede my ability to do work as well as my general well-being.
In one instance, a particularly rude customer was combative before he finished unloading his cart. When bringing the cart over to the bagging area, it got stuck on a rubber part of the register. He proceeded to ram it forward, almost running over my foot and hitting my hand slightly.
He then started belittling me and talking down to me. I simply brushed him off as rude and smiled at him, telling him to have a nice day when he left. However, if this same situation had happened, but he was openly carrying a gun, the situation would have escalated to a genuine threat.
When people have guns or weapons openly displayed, I feel that they are both more confident in themselves and prone to use said weapons. Every person who carries a gun openly turns themselves into a threat, whether they are actually a threat or not.
However passionate I feel about this issue, it is something that is happening whether I want it to or not. I have to learn to live with it and work around it. I only hope that my employment at Publix isn’t affected by this change, and eventually, it will be reverted back to how it was before.

Sad. I wrote a letter to the Publix CEO, Kevin Murphy, expressing my concerns and got a form letter back from a customer service rep. Sigh.

I’ll never shop in Publix again due to fear for my children’s and my own safety. Guns in grocery stores? Recipe for murder.

No it wont go back to the way it was because our fantastic Supreme court Sided with us LAW ABIDING CITIZENS that know how to carry a firearm & its responsibilty. Thank God now even regular people can protect themselves & others from shooters & bad guys. ….why should only the rich have armed protection. …ill protect myself…

I WAS a Publix customer for over 20 years. Until this. They had a choice. They chose guns.

As many thought Florida would turn into the “old West” with open carry.
It just has not happened.
I have not seen one exposed gun yet.
Has anyone?

I have been shopping at my local Publix since 1981. I’m so disappointed by Publix’s decision to allow open carry. In the situation this employee describes, having a firearm readily available lends to the possibility of an angry situation escalating to a shooting situation.
Now a potential shooter doesn’t have to hide his firearm. He can enter the store, walk the aisles freely until he finds his desired target. How frightening!
Maybe I’ll be looking for another grocery store where shopping can be a pleasure. And safe.

I think it’s a bad idea,I agree that people openly carrying guns want to send a threatening message to everyone around them. I also agree with the store workers comments about rude people in the store. I also looked at Publix as a family oriented shopping experience and not the wild wild west.So while it might not bother Publix as much,l don’t want my little one to be exposed to any of it,so we’ll shop where it is safe

I will be doing a lot more shopping at Winn Dixie. That’s just my thoughts. Not asking for response. Blessings.

Why does Publix need open carry guns in their stores. Going to Winn Dixie or Aldi’s from now on!

I won’t shop at Publix anymore.

There are some very bad people that are hot tempered and should not have guns. There are a lot of racist people who will use the gun as what they think is strengthen . I have cut my visits down to once a few weeks at Publix’s do to the new law. As soon as I can fine a store that has a good quality of meat I will not shop at Publix’s anymore. They have increased their prices extremely high. I use to really enjoy shopping there until the price increases and allowing guns in the store. Publixs use to be my favorite place to shop but not anymore nervous to be in there and prices are to high and Walmart will have same item for half the price. I want to be safe when I shop and be able to afford my groceries.

No need to carry weapons. This is a door that would open to many of one big mistake that would change lives. Stop hate and learn to be mindful of our actions.

I will continue to shop at Publix but the first time I see an open carry, I’m out of there!
