The Claw: Week 22

Senior Lucas Prandini throws the ball on the field at district finals against the Jaguars rivals: Archbishop McCarthy.

Welcome back, Jaguars! Thank you for tuning in to week twenty-two of The Claw winter sports edition. Last week was an eventful one as many of our Jaguar athletic programs competed in several games. Let’s get straight into last week’s athletic report.

Jags Soccer Protecting the Den

Last week, the Jags boys’ soccer team began their post-season run and competed in two games in the district tournament, going 1-1. The first game was in District Semifinals at home against McArthur High School on Wednesday, January 21. They won the game with a final score of 4-1. Senior Gabriel Calderon accounted for two goals, while seniors Julian Iodice and Emmanuel Baptiste both scored one goal each.

They then advanced to District Finals as they were the home team and faced off against their cross-town rival, Archbishop McCarthy High School, on Thursday, January 22. The Jaguars lost the game 2-0.

The Jags boys soccer team now stands with a record of 8-5-3, and is ranked #117 in Florida. Their next game depends on their record, which determines if they will place in Regionals.

Lady Jags on the Prowl

Last week, the Lady Jags soccer team went 2-0 as they competed in the district tournament, which consisted of two games where they were the home team for both. First, they competed in District Semifinals against Hollywood Hills High School on Wednesday, January 21, and they won the game 8-0. They were led by junior Madison Connacher, who scored four goals, while seniors Sierra St. Surin and Amanda Fernandez, junior Grace Ahern, and 7th grader Oreofe Soyode all scored one goal each.

Then, this victory brought them to the District Finals, where they faced off against their cross-town rivals, Archbishop McCarthy High School, on Thursday, January 22. They left with a Jaguar victory as the game was tied 1-1, bringing them to penalties, winning 5-4. The district championship title goal was scored by senior Catalina Castro.

The Lady Jags soccer team now stands with a record of 12-2-2 and is ranked #28 in the state of Florida and #73 in the nation. Their next game takes place in the regional tournament, but their opponents have not been set yet.

Jaguars basketball back for revenge

The Jaguars varsity basketball team had a bye week last week, which means they did not compete in any games.

The Jaguars currently hold a record of 14-4 and are ranked #16 in the state of Florida while being nationally ranked #83. This week, they compete in the BCAA Big 8 tournament, which begins on Wednesday, January 28, and their opponents are not yet set.

JV basketball roaring through the season

Last week, the Jaguars JV basketball team went 0-1 as they competed in their last game of the season at the Crossover MLK Classic tournament at Highlands Christian High School. They were the home team against North Broward Prep High School on January 19 and lost the game 38-49.

They have officially concluded their season, and their record stands at 7-7.

Shooting for success: Lady Jags Basketball

The Lady Jags basketball team went 2-0 last week as they competed in one home and one away game. On Tuesday, January 20, they were away as they faced off against Mourning High School, and won the game with a final score of 30-11. This was followed by a home game against South Plantation High School, and they left with a Jaguar victory of 50-30.

Their current record stands at 6-9, and they have one game scheduled for this week, which is their last game of the regular season. The game is at home against Mater Lakes Academy High School on Tuesday, January 27 @6pm.
