Women Giving Back To Women

Marlee Jaworski, Staff Writer

March is the month to shine light on women who have fought for equality, justice, and overall the ability to be a part of our nation without being criticized. There have been many famous women who have played a great role in gaining these rights for women such as Sandra Day O’Connor, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Sonia Sotomayor, just to name a few. On the same topic, there have been many brands that were actually founded by women for women. These women-owned brands often create higher revenue and allow people to be fearless when voicing their ideas. Here’s a few to consider!

  1. SPANX Women’s Power Conceal-Her-Mid-Thigh Shorts

This brand was founded by Sara Blakely in 2000, when she graduated from Florida State University with a bachelor’s degree in communications. Later on, she then realized that she wanted to make an undergarment that was unnoticeable in her clothing and made her appear slimmer. Spanx was created strictly to help women feel more confident and comfortable in their own bodies. This helpful piece of material comes in many different styles like shorts and bodysuits for different skin complexions. Blakely’s products are found in many different stores (like Target) and online shops (like Amazon). Overall, her success has gained to be very high as Sara is making $1.2 billion dollars a year!

  1. LOLA

LOLA is a newer business that many customers have said nothing but good about. This business had started in 2015 from two very talented women, Jordana Kier and Alex Friedman. Both Kier and Friedman came up with the idea to make feminine products. Coming from a woman’s perspective, they know the harsh chemicals that women have to use just because of a menstrual cycle. These products were developed to make women feel safe and trustworthy of the products they are using on their bodies. This brand looks very good and the simplicity of all of their products makes it easier to read. Sophomore Sophia Assis mentions, “it’s very important that these companies exist so that women have an opportunity to easily reach products that make their lives so much easier. And the innovation of these products should be encouraged.”

  1. Billie Razors

These affordable razors have been a hot purchase in the last few years. Billie razors was founded by Georgina Gooley. She designed these razors with 5 blades to get a clean shave, a magnet to stick to the shower wall, and a rubber back so the razor does not go all over the place. Gooley made it very convenient for women as it is a subscription, so they do not have to worry about forgetting to buy another razor. Not only can you purchase a razor, but there are other handy products like a razor travel case or shaving cream. Many women find it inspiring how Georgina has a mission to normalize women’s body hair. In addition to all of this, the Billie website is also very customer friendly and is not complex.

  1. Strange Bird

Tina Chow Rudolf is the founder of Strange Bird, and she had a mindset of “wellness is the way we treat ourselves” when creating this company. She got a lot of inspiration from her daughter because she wanted to make sure she understood the importance of representation. Rudolf sells products like a meditation bowl, serum, cleanser and many more amazing products. These products help women feel confident in their own skin and allow the skin to glow beautifully. Strange Bird is mostly an online store and brings a lot of positivity to women. As a person who gets stressed easily, these products definitely seem that they would help to control stress and allow time for myself. Freshman Sophia Peterseil even said, “I think it’s important for us to have these types of companies because women love trying new products and finding out what’s best for them and if there is a company that does that it will be very beneficial.”

  1. Summer Salt

As many women know, it is a struggle to find swimsuits that fit best for them without them looking tacky. That is where Summer Salt comes into play: high quality, low price, comfortable swimsuits! How is it possible to get all of that greatness into one brand? Well thanks to Lori Coulter and Reshma Chattaram Chamberlin. They sell swimsuits, active wear, loungewear and much more that allow women to feel stylish for any occasion. As a bonus, consumers can feel safe knowing their items are made from recycled pieces.

  1. Sips By Tea

Sips By Tea was founded by the talented Staci Brinkman. She created this brand as a solution to female-related stress. One thing that makes this brand very powerful is that every time someone buys from them, the money gets donated to Vital Voices, an organization that empowers women leaders. They sell many different teas like blends, collections, flavors and beneficial teas such as the mental clarity tea, energy tea, and sleep tea! Additionally, you can get a tea box that has different tea from a variety of women-founded brands. What is interesting about this brand is its ability to make products that help benefit women in the smallest ways (like using tea as a mechanism for stress, sleep etc). Sophia Assis even said, “I also think that having women run these kinds of companies can ensure their products are even more trustworthy and are the best that they can be.”
