“Three L’s make a W”, outfielder freshman Daisy Ferguson reported on behalf of her team. After a couple tumbles, the Girls Varsity softball team stands strong on their cleats, ready to shine on the diamond like never before.
Last year the varsity softball team placed 8th in the Florida District 5A rankings, 9th in Miami rankings, and 58th in overall Florida rankings. The Lady Jags made it as far as the state championship, having their very last play against South Fork, which unfortunately ended in a loss. However, the determined juniors of that year kept their heads high.
This year they will be taking on the field as seniors, and now hold the responsibility of guiding the players toward a successful season. One of those seniors, Gianney(Gigi) Romero, (shortstop and center fielder) reported on a drastic change among the team. “We lost a lot of talent last year, so hopefully we can come back and recover and get into a really good groove.”
Romero and other seniors are seen as the undecided team captains. “Gigi Romero and Natalie Rivera like those… they keep the team together and they’re like the nicest people on the team” freshman, Daisy Ferguson stated. Ferguson has been on the varsity softball team since her 8th grade year. Her whole entire family played softball in their youth, Ferguson knew her destiny was to play. Enjoying the action as an outfielder, she knows her position to the tee. According to Ferguson, pitcher Jessica Bonas (8th grader) will prove prominence this season. Bonas started their last game, and has played every single game in the season thus far. “I feel like she’s really coming out of her shell this season and she’s been doing really well. I believe in her, and everyone else does too.” Ferguson noted.
As far as the readiness of the team goes, Gianney Romero reported that they have been practicing since before the season began. “We had some conditioning before January that started after our winter break. Then we had tryouts and we’ve been practicing every day since.” she claimed.
Their coach, 2019 Charter graduate, Maxwell Romero, has taken charge of the team. Between the coach and the continuous hope generated by these Lady Jags, there is no limit to what the varsity team can accomplish this season.
