Sliding into Charter’s baseball Senior Night

The thrilling class of ‘24 took the field on Friday, April fifth to celebrate the close end of their season. For some, one of the last baseball  these boys will ever play. This senior night was filled with many tears and good times as the loved ones of all 10 seniors gathered together to be a part of the recognition that all these players deserve.

From the balloons to the banners and signs, each athlete was called and greeted by their family to be walked along the third base line where they would then get congratulated from all five of their coaches. “My mother, sister, aunt, and uncle have been my biggest supporters ever since”  Senior Captain Alejandro Puig says proudly.

Stepping up to the mound was Senior pitcher Tanner Avino who threw the first pitch of the night for the Jags. Avino earned the first out of the game by striking out the second hitter on the Deerfield Beach line up. This led the Jags to having a high start to the game and letting no runs for Deerfield Beach be scored in the first inning of Charters senior night.

Once Charter was in the batter’s box, Senior Isaiah Negron wasted no time by getting a line drive that turned into a double from an error Deerfield Beach had. “I was born to play the game” as Negron has been able to gain experience from his family members who have also all played the special game. The  Jaguars fans at this point were roaring for Negron’s play as  Senior Justin Providence was next up to bat. Providence hits the second double of the game allowing for Isaiah not only to score but also get the first run on the scoreboard for PPCHS.

Still during the bottom of the first inning,  Senior Jonathan Caballero gets a single allowing for the second run for Charter to come in. The boys are on a streak at this point with  Senior Brandon Garcia getting a walk right after Caballero’s hit. Throughout this whole season and during this game specifically was when Dylan Coello realized, “I feel like my high school career has already flown by so quickly” he also feels that “this being my last just makes me want to win it all even more.”

Fast forward to the top of the third inning, sadly Deerfield Beach was now in the lead but the Jags still managed to push through the inning. Even though Deerfield Beach scored a few more runs making the score 6-2, the boys were still able to hold them back and get a batter out at home and a strikeout from pitcher Trey Glaser. Brandon Garcia then started the bottom of the fourth inning with a solid single into right field which excited the crowd after the previous inning the Jags had.

Almost all of these players have been playing baseball since the young age of  three years old,  so they all have grown to have big dreams and goals within the sport.

“These coaches have been the biggest help and support in my baseball career, they never gave up on me when I wasn’t performing at my best, and helped me reach my peak potential” Providence expresses.

The fifth and sixth inning was where the Jaguars made the long awaited comeback with getting their 6 runs on the board. It started with Senior Oswaldo Yanez getting a single line drive, then Alejandro Puig getting a double to bring in Yanez during the fifth inning. In the sixth inning  Sophomore Everett Suazo gave another line drive to the center fielder and Dylan Coello got a single that turned into a triple due to errors from Deerfield.

Even though it was a tough effort for the comeback, the Jaguars fell short  in a disappointing 8-6 loss.  The Jags battled hard against Deerfield Beach. These seniors have noticed that it is not always about the performance you give, but it is also about doing a sport you love most. Alejandro Puig often exaggerates, “no matter how many obstacles come your way, never give up and always remember that hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work.” Regardless of what could happen for the rest of the season, the numbers 1, 6, 7, 10, 12, 14, 21, 26, 29 and 37 will always have a growing connection for Charter on and off the baseball field.
