Jaguars hit the ground running

In the first game of the fall league this year, our PPCHS Varsity basketball team faced off against Riviera Prep, the defending state champions. While it was a close one, the Jaguars ended up clutching the game by seven points, leaving the final score at 69-62. The game was defined by its breakneck changes in momentum, showcasing the skills of all the players on the court.

The starting five players included Solomon Hughes, Justin Snell, Josh Harris, Jeremy Elyzee, and Ramez Zayed. Harris proved himself to be a big body in the paint, while Justin and Solomon showcased their abilities as guards. Ramez excelled in defense alongside Jeremy, whose versatility was undeniable on both sides of the ball. The game had several exciting moments throughout, causing the movement of the ball to go back and forth after nearly every play. “I hit three threes, so that was pretty cool. But I’d say the highlight of the game was Ramez’s and-1 because it changed the momentum of the game in our favor.”

Solomon, a senior, was proud of how the team performed but admitted that before the game, he had some doubts concerning the team’s ability to communicate with each other. “I was unsure of how we would do, just because of all the new guys that we have. But I knew that with the senior core we had we would still be solid, but I was just unsure of how the new guys would fit into the system.” Fortunately, the team exceeded his expectations. “We jelled really well together.” Junior Zamari Days also felt that the game had been a strong start. “We played really well. We had great energy and defense for our first time playing this year.”

The new layout of the team wasn’t the only concern. Riviera Prep was a daunting matchup, as the team had many talented players. “They have a player who’s ranked top 100 in the nation and has offers to top schools in the nation,” Solomon said. However, the Jaguars were able to pull through in the end. Riviera attempted to make a quick run as time ran out, but it wasn’t enough.

Being able to win against the defending champs did wonders for team morale, with many players strong in the belief that the state title is well within the Jaguars’ reach this season. While there’s no way to know for sure how the upcoming season will go this winter, spirits remain high as the Jaguar boys make their way onto the court once again.
