Three weeks after seeing their district championship streak end, the Pembroke Pines Charter Jaguars soccer team returned to Archbishop McCarthy’s glowing blue turf field. This time, determined to reshape the narrative.
In the regional semifinal on Feb. 12, the Jaguars defeated top-seeded Archbishop McCarthy in penalty kicks after a 1–1 draw, advancing deeper into the postseason. The win came after a 2–0 loss to McCarthy in the district final on Jan. 22, the first time in program history Charter had fallen to the Mavericks in that round.

McCarthy struck first when senior forward Charles Bonfiglio finished at the back post within the opening 10 minutes, giving the Mavericks early momentum. But unlike the district final, the Jaguars responded immediately.
Five minutes later, senior midfielder Gabriel Calderon broke through from midfield, drawing a foul in the box to earn a penalty. Calderon stepped up himself and calmly converted into the bottom right corner, leveling the match and shifting momentum back toward Pembroke Pines Charter.
From there, the contest tightened into a defensive battle. Both teams generated chances, but neither was able to break through for the remainder of regulation, forcing the match into penalty kicks.
Despite missing two penalty attempts, the Jaguars stayed alive behind senior goalkeeper Mateo Vazquez, who came up with two crucial saves. Senior forward Julian Iodice then stepped forward and slotted the decisive kick past the goalkeeper, sending Charter past the top seed and into the regional final.
As the final kick hit the net, the Jaguars sprinted toward the bleachers, celebrating with the crowd as the moment settled in under the night sky.
For Iodice, the moment reflected the mindset the team carried into the match.
“A lot of people counted us out after the district final,” Iodice says. “Before the game, coach told us it was a funeral, and we all knew what that meant. Stay focused, block out the noise, and of course, take care of business.”
Head coach Marc Lue Young said the message before kickoff centered on treating the moment with seriousness and belief, emphasizing that games of this magnitude are decided by players willing to embrace pressure rather than shy away from it.
For the Pembroke Pines Charter Jaguars, the victory meant a lot more than what transpired on the field. It was also a response to adversity and a reminder of the program’s standard.
The win will hopefully send Pembroke Pines Charter into the regional final with momentum. The Jaguars are set to face seventh-seeded Dr. Joaquin Garcia at home in the Charter Den on Feb. 17 at 6 p.m, with a place in the state final four on the line.
