Killer on the Loose

A two week long manhunt has finally come to a close. Two years ago, in April 2021, Danelo Cavalcante brutally stabbed his ex-girlfriend to death thirty times in front of her two children. He was apprehended and found guilty, sentenced to life in prison (The Inquirer). Around two weeks ago, Cavalcante carried out an escape that had authorities dumbfounded. Police cameras showed him climbing up a fence to reach the roof, and then slipping through razor wire to flee the prison grounds. The hunt ensued across the state of Pennsylvania. After being spotted inside people’s homes, local stores, getting a rifle, and just meters away from police, he finally fled to the forests of Pennsylvania. After two weeks of searching during extreme heat and violent thunderstorms, he was finally ambushed and detained by a police dog. He is currently in a maximum security prison, awaiting trial.

Tragedy in Libya

Last week, tragedy struck in Libya when Storm Daniel pushed inland on the city of Derna. Torrential winds and heavy rainfall devastated the city, but the real carnage occurred when the two dams around the city burst. The rainwater that was held back by the weathered dams came forth, demolishing everything in its path. Thousands of people were swept up in the flood, buildings were leveled to the ground, and the whole city was mostly reduced to rubble (The New York Times). The death toll is currently estimated to be around 10,000 people. It’s hopeful that the support being provided by other countries will help the aid efforts (CNN).

North Korea and Russia Ally

Last Tuesday, for the first time in four years, Kim Jong Un left his home country of North Korea, venturing to Russia to discuss a possible alliance. It’s largely classified as to what Vladmir Putin, Russia’s president, and Kim Jong Un discussed in their meeting, but some public statements were made by the governments of both countries. Allegedly, the North Korean dictator pledged “full and unconditional support” for Russia in the Russo-Ukrainian War. This goes against several United Nation (UN) laws, which ban North Korea from exporting any sort of arms (PBS). It’s expected that North Korea will supply Russia with its arsenal of missiles and ammunition, but only time will tell how the UN will react.

Officers Charged Over the Death of Tyre Nichols

On January 7th, 2023, Tyre Nichols was pulled over for reckless driving by a squad of police officers. Panicked, he fled the scene, only to be caught by the police again a few minutes later. After being apprehended, the officers threatened to beat and tase him. Nichols remained calm, as shown on the body cams worn by the police officers. After a few minutes of this, he broke free and began to run, when one of the officers shot him with a stun gun. The group began to hold him to the ground as he was violently beaten and kicked while he cried out for his mother. He was then administered first aid by the officers once they realized how far they’d gone in the assault. He died in the hospital three days later (ABC). Just last week, the officers involved were charged for the incident, with two being sentenced to life in prison, and the other two sentenced to up to 20 years.
