“Do you know how to stop a bleed?”, is said by guest speaker Mr. Pardo, and heard throughout the library auditorium as he speaks to a room full of future health professionals. The atmosphere depicts a sense of excitement, but also concern as they get shown a “Warning! Graphic Content Ahead!” slide. 

Members of HOSA got to participate in an exhilarating lesson where they experienced hands-on training on how to stop a bleed. Stop The Bleed is an organization that encourages bystanders to become trained, equipped, and empowered to help in a bleeding emergency before the professional emergency responders arrive. At PPCHS, Mr. Pardo taught students how to use tourniquets, pack wounds, and respond to situations in which a person is bleeding. While many may hope to never have to use this technique, the chances of having to save someone using these methods are as high as  40%. However, at Pines Charter, there are still many who are not bothered and hope to experience the many new ideas HOSA has to offer:

“I had such an educational experience and the little lesson was very intriguing. We learned about ways to stop bleeding; both an arterial bleed and a venous bleed. I hope to see more educational lectures just like this. I found them really fun. I also hope we get more chances to interact with other medical professionals.” – Fiona Findley, Junior

“I thought it [training] was really nice and cool to learn for people who want to be in the medical field. If you’re in a situation where you need it, it’s good to have. I want to learn more about what career that I want to go into and hope to see more medical terminology and anatomy.” – Alexandria Williams, Senior

“As a board member, it made me happy to see so many people show up for the Stop the Bleed Training. It showed me how many people have strong interests in the healthcare field. During the Stop the Bleed training, I learned how to immediately respond to bleeding and how important it is to compress the wound. I hope to have many more workshops on various health topics throughout the year to give members hands-on experience in the different fields within medicine.” – Hana Bushra, Secretary, Senior

“It was really interesting seeing everyone at the event! The club members were able to experiment with different first aid devices and use problem-solving skills to figure out how to effectively use them. It was a lot of fun watching everyone learn about the different devices and techniques used to stop the bleed! Mr. Pardo gave us a really good introduction to stopping someone from bleeding out in an emergency situation. I’m really looking forward to this year at HOSA! We have a lot of internal events coming up, such as HOSA week in November. I’m really excited to see everyone compete in an event that interests them and deepens their curiosity for exploring healthcare!” – Hannah Flores, Membership Liaison, Junior

“It was incredible to see so many of our members come out to this event and learn about what to do in emergency situations. Mr. Pardo, our speaker, did an incredible job teaching us all how to use different equipment such as tourniquets and how to pack wounds and I’m glad all of our members were able to be there to learn from him as we never know what situations we’ll be put in. We learned that the #1 cause of preventable death after injury is bleeding. Throughout the year in this club, I hope to see more speakers come in and interact with our members to expose them to the various healthcare fields whether it be emergency medicine, nursing, etc.” – Annabelle Acevedo, Events Coordinator, Junior
