As students hurry to purchase their pep rally tickets, crowds fill the bleachers, finding seats beside friends as everyone gathers to watch the performances. Among all the acts, the ones that people seemed to be most excited for were the talented dance groups: Latin Dance, Dance, KPOP, and the Step Team. Each team was ready to bring their uplifting energy, pride, and style to show the audience.

However, behind the scenes the atmosphere was completely different. Away from the ongoing cheering in the gym, the dancers gathered together for their last moment before their names were called onto the floor.

They motivated and encouraged one another before it was their turn to perform. This was the moment they had been practicing for months for, and their time had finally come to show off what they can do.

KPOP was the first team called onto the dance floor, instantly setting the tone for the performances that followed. Their synchronization between one another truly captivated the audience, and set the confidence between the dancers. Amongst their performance, one stood out more than the others. They had replicated the viral GAP dancing advertisement featuring Katseye.

The moment the song began, the crowd erupted from their seats and instantly recognized the trend and started dancing along. While their performance was wonderful, there were so many things that had been left in the dark. KPOP junior Vice President, Leila Rostran uncovers exactly how things were behind the scenes.

“I definitely think pep rally was a new experience, especially since we have a lot of new dancers, but it helped them develop their skills. What we struggled with a lot though was practices, a lot of people did not show up, but at the end of the day a lot of our team members tried their hardest, and we knew they were capable of doing so.”

As the crowd’s cheering began to settle down, the Step Team was then announced onto the floor, ready to keep the momentum going. Trading KPOP’s sharp choreography for powerful rhythms and bold stomps, they filled the gym with intensity that could be felt through every beat. Each step reflected exactly how hard they had worked for this very moment.

Their steps echoed throughout the stands, perfectly in sync and full of energy. The gym was filled with school spirit as the team continued to perform. Students began to cheer on the team, and everyone around them, creating that sense of unity amongst the crowd.

Behind the scenes, that level of synchronization did not come that easily, and the team’s commitment ran deeper than what you’d be able to see first hand. Through their teamwork, patience, and sharing goal to bring their best to the floor, they were able to bring exactly what they worked for.

One of the junior board members, Olivia Ann, shared a behind-the-scenes look at the Step Team’s experience.

“While the performance went really well, it was hard keeping our rhythm with all the noise in the gym,” she said. “Before performing, I was really excited, but I knew some of the newer members were nervous since it was their first time on stage…and honestly, I was too.”

Following the Step Team’s performance, the Latin Dance Team overtook the floor. Keeping the same exciting momentum, the group continues to corporate a vibrant mix of cultures and rhythm into their dances.

Their routine is blended with traditional Latin dances including a more modern flair. While their performance was wonderful, there had been some struggle that was not seen by others.

Junior Emerson Toledo and senior Jesse Cisneros, dancers for Latin Dance, shared their thoughts on the prep rally experience.

Toledo said, “ Performing was amazing; knowing that I’m dancing with my friends takes away all the pressure. The nerves when you’re walking out to perform are crazy, but once the music comes on, it all goes away.”

Cisneros added, “I think we handled it pretty well by having practices every day to make sure we got the dance right, even with such little time. Right before the prep rally, everyone was obviously nervous, but we tried to encourage each other and make it an exciting experience.”

So while there is so much tension and anxiety coming from performing in front of others, there is also that sense of upliftment and unity between one another.

Wrapping up the pep rally, the spotlight turned to PPCHS’s Dance Team for the final big performance. The dance team performed in a manner that shocked the crowd, every year they never failed the students, administrators, and teachers, and this time was no exception. The energy in the room was thrilling as each routine was perfectly choreographed. Behind the scenes, countless hours of practice, late-night to early-morning rehearsals, and it was all worth it.

Senior Kyra Theodore, one of the Dance Team’s captains commented some struggles and achievements that hadn’t been noticed before,

“While everyone in the crowd was very pleased with how we performed, the energy from the crowd gave us so much adrenaline that it made the performance even better. While the finished product was good, we still had a lot of bumps along the way in order to reach that goal.”

As the Dance Team came to the end of their performance, the pep rally came to a close. Yet, all the memories behind each performance lingered and will continue to stay with the performers. Their passion and teamwork between one another turn simple steps into a huge celebration of school spirit and pride.

What the crowd saw was genuinely only a glimpse of all the effort and hard work that happened behind the scenes. For weeks, the KPOP, Step, Latin Dance, and Dance Teams have poured their time and heart into perfecting every move, turning all those tiring hours of practice into something worth wild.
