I spent money on the Wendy’s Meal of Misfortune, so I should’ve known exactly what I was walking into. The bag said, “There’s nothing happy about this meal,” and honestly, it wasn’t lying.
I must admit, the packaging is cool if you’re into the whole Wednesday Addams aesthetic. It actually felt like effort went into this promo, but honestly, I think that’s where most of the money went.
You’ve got things like the “Spoon of Gloom” with your Frosty, and names like “Rest in 10-Piece Nuggets” and “Cursed & Crispy Fries.” But despite the death-core naming, they’re just regular nuggets and fries. The spicy nuggets were fresh and crispy (definitely recommend), and the fries were what you’d expect. The regular nuggets always turn out bland for me, so I was glad I chose the spicy option.
I was hoping that McDonald’s would go all out and drop something wild, like some kind of haunted burger moment. Something in the spirit of the Grimace Shake, when people were turning purple and ‘disappearing’ on TikTok. But sadly not, it was just renamed items and darker packaging.
What made the meal different was the sauce situation. You’re supposed to get two mystery “Dips of Dread” sauces.
The sauces included: “You Can’t Hyde,” “This Will Sting,” “Grave Mistake,” and “Nowhere to Woe.”
They weren’t labeled, so it turned into a guessing game. I think I got “You Can’t Hyde” first, which had a spicy ketchup taste with a purple-red tint and a late pepper kick. The second one was thicker, almost like a sweet chili. The third was a black sauce which looked terrifying, but ended up being sweet with a hint of heat. No clue which was which, but all three were oddly good. Honestly, the sauces made the meal more interesting than it had any right to be.
Then there’s the Frosty, “Raven’s Blood.” It’s a standard chocolate or vanilla Frosty with this black cherry swirl around the cup. I got chocolate, and the cherry added a tart, dark flavor that reminded me of a chocolate-covered cherry I’ve had from Trader Joe’s.
Overall, was this the best meal I’ve ever had? No, but it was fun. If you like trying limited edition food-drops, or just want something new for the sake of it, I’d say give Wednesday’s meal a shot.
