Known as one of the darkest days in history, the United States faced terrorists from al-Qaeda who hijacked four commercial airplanes consisting of 30 passengers each, striking the World Trade Center in New York City 24 years ago.
This tragedy is remembered as the unfortunate events of September 11, 2001, where nearly 3,000 lives were lost in the attacks; The devastation reshaped the country’s security and unity. Today, the anniversary is marked by moments of silence, solemn ceremonies, and reflections on a country that has been forever changed.
Nearly a quarter-century later, people today still recount where they were and what they were doing when they learned of the attacks. Memorials and vigils are held nationwide, to ensure that no one forgets the victims and their families.
Last month, officials in New York City announced that they identified the names of three more victims who died during the attacks, but 40% of the victims are still unidentified today. To speak out about this tragedy, President Donald Trump attended the 24th anniversary of 9/11 during memorial services, showing his grief and support for the victims and vowing to “never forget.”
“I think 9/11 taught a lot of Americans the importance of our country being united, but I think we’re going against that now,” said PPCHS senior Divyya Sathiaseelan.
As America enters a new age of political violence, the country’s citizens are reacting to current events with fear and foreboding about the direction the nation is going in. This is why it is crucial that we remember America’s history and vow to never forget the attacks that took place on September 11th.
