From The Emoji Movie to K-pop Demon Hunters, Sony has drawn in the public through its advancements in animation. These changes have stood out to viewers through their captivating artwork that the company has achieved despite dozens of failures.
Sony Pictures Entertainment is known for creating The Michells vs the Machines, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Hotel Transylvania, and the Spider-Verse franchise. However, the company is infamous for producing movies that contrast with one another.
Sony strives to change the format of each film, making sure every one contains a different art style from the previous. Recently, Sony has appealed to its audiences with its latest movie releases. The company has left a large impact on the industry with its unique take on animation.
DreamWorks, the art studio behind Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and The Bad Guys, reflects how Sony’s inspiration has traveled within the industry. Many art companies are now realizing that innovative visuals enhance the quality of their films. Even Disney is acknowledging this new era of animation by releasing the film Wish, which was inspired by Walt Disney’s 2D concept art from the early times.
Pembroke Pines Charter High School (PPCHS) sophomore Carla Duran exclaims, “I think it’s so cool that they are willing to dabble in different art styles [especially] when other animation companies stick to one style, for example, Pixar,” she continues, “It’s so interesting to see multiple designs and concepts in one movie, like the Spider-Verse movies, where they added a LEGO scene and then the next [scene] is in comic form.”
Sony Pictures’ experimentation, when it comes to their animated films, has led to immense success. For example, their new hit movie Kpop Demon Hunters is completely 3D, yet they incorporated cartoon-like facial expressions with anime references attached. The animation industry has stuck with realistic expressions, anatomy, and articulation, while Sony Pictures Animation has been two steps ahead.
“I’m really impressed by what Sony is doing,” says sophomore Amaya Richards-Walton, “Their animation looks extremely articulated, and Kpop Demon Hunters shows what other animation studios [have the potential] to bring.”
Sony’s production has inspired millions with their contributions to the art industry. With more stylized designs within animated films, Sony’s success is only expected to build from here forward.
