Brielle Gari
First period freshman year, Brielle walked into the class, Intro to Journalism in C117, not knowing the impact that this class would have in her life. As she began to fall in love with the journalism field, Brielle’s sophomore year, she decided to join the newspaper class, otherwise known as The CHAT. Brielle has been a part of The CHAT for three years, a Staff Writer her freshman year, and the Sports Editor her Junior and Senior year.
Brielle’s sophomore year, she won two awards at Florida Scholastic Press Association (FSPA), one of the awards that she had won was for her first ever sports story. This one moment is when she found her passion for sports writing, as she knew she wanted to be a sports writer and broadcaster. Throughout Brielle’s years in The CHAT, the small moments are what meant the most to her.
Sports was not just a section for Brielle, it was her life. She was a dedicated player and writer, while being a part of the Latin Dance Team, the Softball team, and the Soccer team during her high school career. She did not want to be on the sidelines, she wanted to be in the game.
Her passion for sports only grew stronger once she became the sports editor for the CHAT. Brielle knew what she wanted to do and she had goals. She wanted to make the sports section the most productive and active section on the website. Which she had accomplished, her senior year, as she received the award: Most Active Section. As Brielle made sure to publish at least three stories a week.
Passing on the ball, throughout her senior year, Brielle trained and mentored her little: Daisy to become the Sports Editor of the CHAT Newspaper. Hoping that her legacy will continue to thrive at Charter.
Leaving behind her legacy, Brielle notes, “never let anyone or anything stop you from pursuing your dream or passion. Take the criticism as fueling and work for your end goal.” Brielle Gari is continuing her academic career at Pennsylvania State University, majoring in journalism.
Dylan Williams
Dylan had entered room C117 first period his freshman year, and that is where his journalism career began in the Intro to Journalism class. At first William’s said he took the class because he “just needed an elective, and [he] didn’t know what else to do”, but he stated that his writing skills strengthened over his freshman year, and he began to enjoy writing stories and writing in general.
Dylan took a different approach his sophomore year and joined the AICE Media Studies class to continue his love for creative writing. Due to his outstanding performance in AICE Media, the CHAT advisor, Mr. Fagen asked him to join the CHAT. Dylan’s friendship with Brielle influenced him to join the newspaper.
During his junior year, Dylan enjoyed writing sports stories, whether it was a feature story, or stories about any important games. Due to his success in the sports section, he became the Sports Assistant, and continued to strengthen the sports section. During FSPA in his junior year, he received an All-Florida for one of his sports stories, and after receiving this award “[he] realized this is something [he] was actually good at, and [he] could possibly do in the future.”
At the end of junior year he became the Social Media Editor because of his outgoing personality. Being Social Media Editor, Dylan says that “this was the most fun year [he] had in newspaper.” Interviewing with the rest of the social media crew and making videos “made [his] day, and [he] felt like it made other people’s day,” the freedom and the lack of stress from this position helped him fully pursue his creativity and let him become successful.
Dylan says that “this year was one of the best social media years for the CHAT,” and he feels very honored to be a part of the CHAT social media. Not only that, but all the accomplishments that were made throughout the year, such as posting for a month straight on social media and acquiring the SNO Badge, having many videos gain a lot of traction, and getting recognition from the Sun Sentinel for a Social Media Award. All of those little things showed “the dedication that the social media team put in,…I was proud to be a part of that.” Dylan says.
He says he will always cherish all the friends he made through social media, and “leaving social media in Madison and Krystal’s hands, they will do bigger and better things than what we did this year.” Dylan will be attending Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, and he can’t wait to see what the future holds for the social media of the CHAT.
