Disney’s latest live action adaptation, Snow White, has arrived with much anticipation but has left audiences and critics divided. Starring Rachel Zagler as Snow White and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen, the film attempts to modernize the 1937 classic but struggles to capture the original’s magic.
Zegler performed a commendable performance, bringing depth to the role. Her portrayal added a contemporary edge to Snow White, which aimed to resonate with today’s audience. In the original version of Snow White, the princess dreams of true love; this Snow White is focused on personal ambition. The romance between Snow White and the Prince is almost entirely removed. Some may appreciate the change in direction, while others argue that the new direction strays away from the fairy tale magic that is intertwined into all Disney movie classics.
Gal Gadot’s depiction of the Evil Queen was engaging and lived up to the essence of the menacing role. The costumes displayed throughout the movie made the Evil Queen feel even more powerful, not only through her actions but by the fine details within her intricate costumes. Gadot delivered a strong performance that will hopefully have a lasting impact.
Visually, the film offers a blend of elaborate customs and CGI effects to deliver the nature of the original 1937 movie. However, the reimagined seven dwarfs, portrayed through CGI, have been met by major criticism for lacking the charm and individuality that made the original characters loved. Nevertheless, still impressive.
Disney animated classics are known for their unforgettable songs, but the new Snow White struggles in this area. The film included new songs alongside the original music, but they haven’t been as memorable as Disney’s past hits. These include ”A Hand Meets a Hands” and “Snow White Returns.”
The film has also been surrounded by controversy. Casting choices and deviations from the original storyline have sparked debates among fans and critics.
Adding to the film’s struggles is its disappointing box office performance, with an opening weekend of just $88 million against a reported $270 million budget. Business Insider suggested that factors beyond creative choices, such as mixed reviews, led to the underwhelming performance.
While Snow White brings a fresh perspective to the tale, it struggles to win over fans of the original. The attempt to modernize its iconic parts deviates from the original Disney magic. However, this can be a new direction for Disney movies in an attempt to mature the ever-growing franchise.
