Men and women can both be award show hosts, but does one gender do the job more efficiently? Awards shows have always been an important part of the entertainment industry, but what makes these shows so memorable is the experience the host gives to the audience. They set up the whole mood for the whole show, integrating humor and entertaining remarks throughout their performance.
In 2024, numerous shows had hosts like Chris Rock, Whoopi Goldberg, Tina Fey, Jimmy Fallon, and others. This is a diverse set of hosts who all are able to bring an eccentric, enjoyable experience while hosting. So does gender truly make a difference when hosting an awards show?
During the past decades, women have been fighting for their places in the workforce. Some people still believe that being a host is a “man’s job,” not a woman’s. During awards shows, the majority of hosts are men like Chris Rock (BET awards), Jo Koy (Golden Globes 2024), Ricky Gervais (Golden Globes 2010, 2012), and multiple others.
A breakthrough for women in recent years has occurred, and females are starting to become increasingly more accepted in this industry.
They offer a fresh perspective and energy in this largely male-dominated industry. Women tend to mix satire, social commentary, and heartfelt remarks into their show, which is unique, and ultimately reels fans in. Men, however, tend to stick to a more chaotic, humorous way of hosting, adding quick on-a-whim remarks to almost everything.
Whoopi Goldberg, Tina Fey, and Amy Poehler are some living examples of the interesting atmosphere women can bring as hosts. They have been immensely appreciated for single handedly flipping the way many people think about a woman taking over a big part.
This year, during the 2025 Golden Globes, Nikki Glaser was the host, and she was a crowd favorite. She is an Emmy, Golden Globes, and Grammy nominated stand-up comedian, so it is no surprise she made a mark on the 2025 Golden Globes. From endless jokes, sparkly outfit changes, and her own take on “Popular” from Wicked, she delivered a delightful show, which the audience ended up loving.
While female hosts tie in comedy and heartfelt anecdotes, males have also left their mark on awards shows. Male hosts give a sense of tradition in awards shows as well as bringing in unmatched jokes. Their comments tend to be more spontaneous, unpredictable, and very bold, making for a highly entertaining, unforgettable night.
Chris Rock is a large and pivotal example of being a host that gifts the audience with an unpredictable and entertaining experience. During the 94th Academy Awards, Chris Rock made a bold joke to Will Smith’s wife, Jada Smith. Will Smith got up and slapped Rock in the middle of the show, which shocked viewers at that time and became one of the most trending incidents to happen at an awards show.
The 2025 Golden Globes ended up as a success compared to the 2024 Golden Globes. Nikki Glaser did great as a host. In comparison, Jo Koy’s performance in 2024 was mediocre at best. According to NBC News, The Talon, and other sources, Koy’s jokes were average and sometimes offensive. The audience believed he wasn’t the most entertaining host that a prestigious awards ceremony could have gotten.
Choosing which gender is a better host is not what anyone should be concerned with; rather, who delivered the finest performance. This varies: some male hosts may outperform females, while some female hostesses may outperform male hosts. It all depends on how well a host delivers their performance and if they satisfy the audience.
Everyone can have off days, so although one performance may have been ordinary, it does not define their whole ability to be a great host. Both male and female hosts have a place on the big stage.
