After an extremely close match up against Coral Glades, ending in a 62-61 victory for the Jags, they continued to build upon their momentum as they headed up to Pompano Beach to face-off against the number one team in the district: Blanche Ely.
This was one of the most anticipated games of the year; the Jaguars being the defending state champs, and the Tigers on a 6-0, undefeated run. This would later look to give Charter their third loss of the season.
The game truly lived up to its potential with both teams giving their all on the court; however our Jags would emerge triumphant in a hard fought game, where they showcased their skill and discipline.
The Jags came out hot, ending the first quarter with a comfortable 23-12 lead. Junior guard Roman Hughes being a key factor in that lead, lighting the Tigers up from beyond the arc. They would end the first half up 34-26, but coming out of the half the Tigers were relentless, clawing their way back into the game.
Starting the fourth, Ely had found their way back into the game trailing by four points. This would be the quarter that decided the outcome of the game.
With clutch free throws by Jacob Trenchfield, junior guard, and Rob Guishard, junior center, they closed out the game for the Jags with a 54-51 victory over the Tigers, after an exhilarating quarter.
Robert Guishard would be the leading scorer of the game, with 17 points, 6 rebounds, and an assist.
Wofford commit and starting senior guard, Maximo Ortega, would be right behind him having his own 12 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 assists.
The Jaguars will now prepare for their match-up against the Northeast Hurricanes, looking to add to their 2-0 run.
With their first district game in the books, the Jaguars are feeling confident. After what seemed like a shaky start to the season, it seems like it could end with a trip back up to Lakeland, FL for a state championship.
