Every student at Pines Charter is one of a kind. From the range of 2,000 kids, each of them hopes to find a piece of themselves in any of the student organizations on campus. Whether it’s to give back to the community through service, or simply to make friends of their own, Charter’s clubs give every student the chance to learn more, make bonds, and create an impact on their community.
For the 2023-2024 school year, Charter’s campus has welcomed two highly-anticipated clubs. Seniors, Samira Butler and Gavin Poore, planning to join the Crochet and Global Service organizations have shared their excitement:
Crochet Club (Ostendorf):
Samira’s been crocheting for four years, using each piece to represent something new. “My favorite piece that I’ve made is a bouquet of lavender I made as a gift for a friend, I used purple yarn and wire to create realistic flowers that would last.”
Since she started, she’s been curious to find new inspiration for the future. “Throughout those four years crocheting has become a huge outlet for me. With every new piece I make, either to wear or display, I become more confident in my abilities and curious to see what else I’m capable of creating. With the new club, I’m looking forward to having a new opportunity to meet others who also crochet and potentially incorporate patterns or ideas they have into my own creations.”
Global Service (Schwab):
Gavin Poore, a member of the debate team, has worked with Ms.Schwab throughout his entire high school experience. During this time, he’s been able to become involved in his own community, serving as a leader in several volunteer projects. “What draws me to global service is the scope and magnitude of what service efforts can do—helping kids and families during harsh times, knowing that my work is not just constrained to where i live, but rather to the entire world.”
He’s looking forward to expanding his impact with the new Global Service club, stating, “While serving communities domestically is beneficial, providing service across the globe is often-times needed more, especially during times of crisis. This satisfaction motivates me every single day to find ways to advocate for service efforts and support international communities to allow them to achieve a greater quality of life.”
