10…9…8…The story of the powerful SpaceX rocket’s journey to reach the stars in the sky was short-lived. Elon Musk’s project spiraled out of control as its engines failed…7…6…5…4…but the engineer fails to see this experiment as a failure, rather, an opportunity to safely explore life on Mars.

“The goal of these missions is just information— it’s to learn as much as possible,” Musk shares with CNBC. Already having $2 million arranged to fund the project and several prototypes ready for examination, Musk aims to reach orbit with his next launch within 12 months.

Though the SpaceX launch fell short to the Musk’s expectations, the trial revealed enough information to improve their next trip into the galaxy. The poor health of the engines, as well as the inability to steer the rocket in a particular direction led to its ultimate collapse. Nonetheless, Musk commends the vehicle’s ability to maintain its overall structure—despite it’s lacking functionality.

With trial and error, Musk still looks forward to the next launch, knowing SpaceX has “made so many improvements” for the next…3…2…1…takeoff!
