Artemis 1 Finally Shoots for the Moon

Anaum Hussain, Staff Writer

After months and failed trials: On November 16th, 2022, the Artemis 1 rocket was finally launched.  There were already two delays at that point and the last launch attempt was supposed to be September 27th, however, the launch was dismantled after the emergence of Hurricane Ian. The unmanned spacecraft lifted off after four delays and is a test flight which will orbit Earth’s moon. It will supposedly head back to Earth on December 11th, 2022. It’s an extensive test of the new Space Launch System (SLS) and the Orion module. “The Space Launch System is the most powerful rocket ever built, generating 8.8 million pounds of thrust on liftoff, making it 1.3 million pounds more powerful than the Saturn V rocket used in the Apollo missions.” (rmg.co.uk)

So far, there haven’t been any confirmed complications. The test flight is leading up to Artemis 2 and Artemis 3’s flights, the latter of which will be manned by a mostly women of color flight crew. The world is changing fast, and we’re having firsthand experience of history in the making!
