Batter Up!

March 11, 2020

The Pines Charter baseball team has started off their 2020 season, and it has not started the way they’d anticipated. They started their season 0-3 dropping games to Stoneman Douglas in extra innings, top ranked program American Heritage, and Cardinal Gibbons. There was one common factor throughout these three games though: none of them were at the Charter home field. Home field advantage is a crucial factor in any sport no matter what sport you play. After this string of losses, the Jags finally got an opponent for their first home game in the form of Belen Jesuit. Belen and Charter have had history with both of the teams facing off last year in the regional quarter finals. The result of that game did not go in the favor of the Jags with Belen finishing off Charter 7-0. This year though, the game ended much different. With the likes of Dylan Vega hitting a two-run home run and Maverick Medina pitched his first complete game of his high school career to lead the Jaguars to a 4-1 victory to make up for their loss last year in regionals. Freshman teammate, Andres Cruz expressed, “We are still a force to be reckoned with and we have a fantastic program.” Pines Charter came out after that phenomenal performance with a 4-0 win versus Taravella High. They started off fast by scoring two runs in the first inning and finished strong with another two runs in the seventh inning. Today, March 11th, Charter will go up against probably their toughest test at home versus Doral Academy.
