In times where we aren’t always able to be as close to others as we’d like, social media has become more important than ever. In maintaining relationships between distant friends, keeping up with the latest trends and staying in touch with relatives across state lines. With several apps such as Snapchat, Instagram, Tiktok and Twitter, we’re able to share music, photos and important information through our own platforms. So with that sinking feeling that you could not live without social media, the argument for which is best remains to be a challenge for all of us.

From her own experience, freshman Isabella Laverde feels that Instagram deserves the title of the best social media platform. “I feel connected watching all of my friends’ stories and all the relatable posts I see on my explore page. Not only that, but I’m able to keep up with the latest information on global issues that I normally wouldn’t be exposed to. Having social media raises awareness for all of that and has features so that I can share several links and infographics to help out in any way I can.” And even though she’s aware that tons of misinformation can be spread in this way, Isabella tries her best to stay up-to-date.

In her own way, sophomore Sienna Garro agrees with Isabella’s view of Instagram. But instead of using it as a platform to keep up with the latest issues, she finds it to be important to express her individuality with others. “I feel like on the app I am allowed to truly express myself in ways I never felt imaginable. Whether it’s through posting new clothing pieces or the photo opportunities I experience with my friends, the app makes me feel like I can connect to an audience (of generally my friends) through posting things that make me feel truly happy.”

While Sienna’s optimistic take seems to be more popular, Coralie Richardson has her own feelings towards which app would take the win for best social media platform. The sophomore took no hesitation to give her own thoughts on the debate: “Instagram is so much more toxic than any other app I’ve seen. It’s responsible for so many social media beefs and causes so many unnecessary insecurities and problems. My favorite would be Tiktok without a doubt. It finds a way to keep me motivated when things aren’t going well. Plus, I basically get to choose what videos come on my feed, while being able to share them with my closest friends.”

On the other hand, senior Kaitlyn Ayebah wasn’t able to choose one over the other. She feels as though they all manage to connect her to people she usually wouldn’t be able to reach without it. “Everyone seems to know that social media brings each of us the benefits of easy communication, but it’s also been able to start many new friendships during quarantine. Though many of us lost connections, new connections were easily made through apps like Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter. And I’ve been able to connect with them on a personal level with Tiktok videos I get on my feed.” Even though she’s aware about the risks that come with it, she feels it’s just as important to stay up-to-date with the changing world.

Though each app has its own pros and cons, I definitely feel that Instagram would win the title of best social media app. I feel most comfortable sharing my own photos and experiences there, regardless of the amount of likes or responses. It creates a sense of community that’s genuine, real, and alive. It’s exactly what I believe the embodiment of social media should be, amongst all platforms, reliving the stresses of judgment and insecurities.
