Gun Control and School Safety

I think of guns being used against people and it makes me sick to my stomach. This topic can be very controversial and saying that I wish guns weren’t a thing would be almost impossible.

Many students can agree with me when I say that guns scare me.

Even if we have laws that prevent certain people from getting guns won’t prevent anything from happening. Legally owned guns are often stolen and used by criminals or someone one who shouldn’t have one. Almost all guns that are used in criminal acts are used illegally so putting laws for “gun control” won’t help the situation. Even though banning guns isn’t realistic, banning guns for the general people and only having it for law enforcement officers is a good start to ending so much violence that is happening today.

For example the Marjory Stoneman Douglas shooting, that was the shooting that made me realize how serious this is, considering the fact that it was so close to our school.

You want to walk through your school feeling safe and not having to worry about not feeling safe in a place where you’re supposed to be learning. That is how I want to feel when I go back to school. The anxiety of anything happening at my school has decreased now that I am doing online school. But when I return to school the thought of something bad happening will still go through my head.

Guns don’t only affect students but women who are in domestic relationships. “A woman’s risk of being murdered increases 500% if a gun is present during a domestic dispute.” (procon.org) Thinking that there are other women that are currently in this situation makes me feel so helpless because a highschool student there is nothing I can do to help. It’s heartbreaking but it’s something that happens quite often.

Whatever happens I think there should be some type of gun control laws to help people feel safer at school and their everyday lives.
