Spooky Spirit: Up and Running
October 16, 2020
The season of fall brings new changes: (the leaves transform from verdant to sunset colors) trees shed their summer leaves, the greens turn into oranges, yellows, reds, or a mix, and (people pass fruit baskets) fruit baskets are passed from one person to the next.
Like a tree’s branches, October has 1 prominent one out of 31 branches: the ‘spooky season’. The spooky spirit crept up and reminded 2020, ‘Boo! I’m still here!’
What are PPCHS students doing to keep the spooky spirit alive despite the given circumstances?
As Lucy from It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie, Brown states, “All you have to do is walk up to a house, ring the doorbell, and say ‘tricks or treats'” (Town & Country). Trick-or-treating may not be a ‘thing’ this year, but that’s not to say that candy from stores shouldn’t be bought… please remember to brush your teeth!
“This made me tear up so bad, thinking about how we need to talk about the family members that passed away so coming generations know where they came from” (Mitú). The movie Coco is a beautiful movie; Disney depicted the holiday Día de Muertos in a way that shows the importance of family, and knowing one’s cultural roots/heritage.
“Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn and cauldron bubble” (Town & Country). Sophomore Dominick Zarcadoolas plans on dressing up with a blood-stained shirt and stained gloves, “just a little something to embrace the Halloween spirit.” William Shakespeare created 37 plays in his lifetime, and many versions are made to this day. In the play Macbeth, the three witches prognosticate… ‘stuff’.
Mickey Cinnamon Roll, Constance’s For Better or For Worse Wedding Cake, Pumpkin Spiced Waffle Sundae, Mickey Monster Mash Burger…(Disney Parks Blog). Hot Butterbeer, Jack the Clown doughnut, Bloody Charred Tandoori Skewers… (Undercover Tourist). Remember the October-themed, but arguably overpriced, food from the theme parks? Not to mention, we all miss the Halloween festivities at Disney and Universal Studios that complete your October-dose of theme parks!
Speaking of Disney, the McKnight family, a YouTube family of 6, visited Disney World this past weekend. They posted pictures dressed up as fairies, from The Pirate Fairy. Maybe dressing up as favorite childhood characters is a great idea for this spooky season!
Now onto Universal Studios. Up on their broomsticks, Draco Malfoy, Ron Weasley, Harry Potter, and Hermoine Granger, are circling the city of Pembroke Pines. However, there is a bridge between Harry Potter fans: the movie series fans, and the book series fans.
Junior Marcella Lesmes says, “it’s sad when I was in middle school, I was made fun of; but now that it’s [the Harry Potter series] popular again, suddenly everyone likes it…” Whereas Connor Pierce, a sophomore, states, “If you like the books, most likely you will like the movies and the same goes for the contrary.” Harry Potter fans… thoughts?
A warm and snuggly blanket, fresh popcorn, candy, and drinks are perfect supplements for classics, such as: The Nightmare Before Christmas, The Addams Family, Hotel Transylvania, Goosebumps, Monster House, The Haunted Mansion, Coraline. Don’t forget about TV shows with spooky, special episodes!
“A person should always choose a costume which is in direct contrast to her own personality.” – Lucy Van Pelt (It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown)
P.S. The s’mores cookies from Crumbl? Delicioso 🙂
