At Pembroke Pines Charter High School (PPCHS), there are some clubs that have amazing achievements but do not get recognized enough. Girls Who Code is a female-student run club at PPCHS that is an extension of the non-profit organization that is globally recognized.
Founded in 2023 at PPCHS, the club has slowly developed into what it is today. The main goal is to make a safe space for women at PPCHS to express their interest in learning about computer coding and tech related skills. The club board heavily emphasizes on the importance of closing the gender gap of the STEM field as it is a “male dominated” field.
Although Girls Who Code may seem like just a club to most people, they have many goals. Co-President Ashna Zacharias comments that their main goals are to “help members gain practical coding experience, fostering creativity and teamwork, and preparing its members for future academic or career paths in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.”
The club aids and prepares women for their life later on by teaching them many skills in the STEM field, such as “giving students the opportunity to explore programming languages, design projects, collaborate with peers, and build confidence in STEM fields.”
As they plan to grow overall as a club, this year the board plans on teaching the members the principles and basics of coding programs such as Python. Python is just like Chat GPT where you tell the program a command and it completes the task.
This year, the club plans on growing their club membership population as a whole. As well as holding several fundraising events. For example, this includes bringing back the Bingo Night fundraiser that they held last year. They also plan on taking part in the Hijab-a-thon which is held by the Muslim Student Association (MSA).
Girls Who Code is not just simply about coding and STEM; it is also about empowering women to lead, innovate, and run the future.
