When you’re hungry, there’s hardly anything better than a hot stack of pancakes, topped with cool whipped cream. Or maybe a fresh omelet. Or just a coffee. Regardless of what you want for breakfast, brunch, or lunch, Weston Diner has it all. For over 20 years, Weston Diner has been a staple of Broward County, and for good reason.
Upon entering the restaurant, an immediate sense of homeliness washes over you, the familiar scents of a classic American breakfast mixing with the simple furnishing of a diner, creating a perfect atmosphere, whether it be early in the morning or in the afternoon.
But it’s not just the setting that draws customers in; it’s also the consistently good food. While the things you’ll find at the diner are nowhere near high-end, they’re not meant to be. The food is simple, familiar, and delicious.
Both their pancakes and waffles are fluffy, light, and sweet, perfectly contrasting with their more savory hash browns. In fact, out of all of the Broward diners, Weston Diner has some of, if not the best, hash browns. The eggs are cooked perfectly and taste fresh. While the coffee leaves a bit to be desired, it’s a diner, and coffee isn’t likely to be all you’re having. The toast was slightly bland as well, although it was served as a side to a much better omelet. Words used by other patrons to describe the food were “authentic,” “homey,” and “plain delicious.”
In addition to being a perfect breakfast or brunch restaurant, there are countless options for lunch, as well, from burgers to pasta and salads. While we can’t speak on the quality of the lunch options, if they’re anything like the breakfast, they’re certainly worth ordering.
“26 years ago, a family came over from New Jersey, and they owned a diner there,” recounts the current owner. “So he decided to open a diner [here] for his kids. It was called ‘It’s Cooking’, or something like that.” After a while, the restaurant was sold off to a cook from a Chinese restaurant next door, who remodeled it with purple curtains and black-and-white tiles, a picturesque American diner.
“All the pictures on the wall are original. In the kitchen, I still have some of the black-and-white tiles. He owned it for about 18 years, but this week marks four years since my husband and I bought it. We lived here, we said, ‘why not buy something local’, and we did it!”
The owner’s personal favorite is “The Mess”, a mix of scrambled eggs, hash browns, sausage, bacon, and cheese; it’s the diner’s top-selling item, which they sell more of than coffee. “It’s a little secret, not many people know you can get it on a wrap, but it’s absolutely heaven,” she says.
Weston Diner may not be fine dining, but it’s quick, delicious food that doesn’t break the bank, and brings a feeling of home. In the owner’s own words: “I know a lot of people, they come every day. I see kids growing up and then going to college. I like the community.”
