Shivers, sweat, and stress are outcomes of the often miserable August-October Florida weather. Obnoxious storms, brutal winds, humidity that leaves one sticky, and blazing heat that makes people want to jump into a freezer are examples of so-called “bad weather.” However, the instances mentioned may seem abysmal, but some actually prefer enduring this for the benefit of their mental health.
Humanity is filled with a variety of perspectives towards certain ideals. What do high school students think about the weather and how it affects their day? Does it ruin their mood, or are these atmospheric patterns beneficial in specific ways?
“Bad weather makes me feel bad, especially at practice. When there is lightning, I just hope that it can cause us to have dry land [practice], but when there isn’t, everything is dark, which makes me depressed and want to curl up in my bed.” – Danielle Brancati, freshman
“The weather affects me a lot since I do sports. It changes the whole trajectory in my day because if it’s raining, I won’t have cross-country meetings or practice.” – Alyssa Salmon, sophomore
“When it comes to the heat, I get agitated, irritated very fast.” – Brianna Barbee, senior
“Obviously, bad weather prevents me from going outside and hanging out, but one general way it affects me is by changing my mood. Rain just doesn’t lie with me.” – Tzadik Thomas, freshman
“With bad weather, you have to be prepared. For example, I have an umbrella in my backpack in case it rains because we live in South Florida.” – Alejandro Agudelo, junior
“It just feels like it brings down the whole mood. In Florida weather, especially, we get so much sun, and suddenly it’s gloomy, and I no longer feel productive.” – Adrian Carvajal, sophomore
“I think it sucks whenever it’s windy or rainy. It messes up my hair all the time. I think it sucks because they have to sometimes cancel the football games. – Liliana Monserrate, freshman
“The weather here is so bad because the humidity always messes up my hair. It messes everything up like my shoes, it’s just overly dirty.” – Nicholas Geribon, senior
“For me, if it’s raining a lot and I’m inside, it’s kind of calming because of the noise– it just calms you down, but if I’m outside, especially at school, it ruins the day because now I’m all wet and cold since everything is outdoors.” – Sarah Pervez, junior
“I think it kinda sucks because it stops me from hanging out with my friends and things I think are fun to do.” – Joshua Herivaux, freshman
“I don’t like bad weather. When it’s too hot, you start sweating and you end up feeling disgusting at school the whole day.” – Norah Nicolas, senior
“Personally, I don’t consider it ruining a day because it just depends on how you look at it. Raining doesn’t necessarily have to be bad, you just have to fix your day around it.” – Manuel Roz Cuadra, junior
