At Pembroke Pines Charter High School (PPCHS), student athletes put in hours of work every day yet, many of the sports and players go unrecognized.
To change this, seniors and Co-Presidents Isabella Abohansen and Giada Porven decided to bring back the Student Athlete Association (SAA) to PPCHS.
They refounded the SAA to raise awareness for all sports and to represent student athletes in and outside of school.
Porven mentions how she “personally felt that student athletes, myself being one, weren’t getting enough credit for what they do. Having this club back means getting that spotlight back.”
This will be the second year of this club running and the presidents this year have a variety of events planned such as fundraisers, drives, and fun events that bring everyone together.
With all the new members joining the club as well as returning members, “many more people know about it now, which we love,” Proven states.
The main event SAA takes part in is their annual sports equipment drive. “We partner up with the Boys and Girls Club of Broward to donate used equipment collected from school. Afterwards, we plan to bring some of our members as volunteers to go and drop off the equipment and play with the kids” Abohasen says.
This drive helps out so many people in our community who may not have access to sports equipment.
Sophomore Pedro Di Napoli, a member of the SAA shares, “I joined this club because I found it very interesting and it has a very positive environment, everyone is super nice as well as the events and key speakers are very interesting.”
This club has created a positive outlet for student athletes. Having that positive environment, taking part in helping others, and being surrounded by lots of other people who understand you.
Between your schedule, stress with sports and school, and everything that comes with it. This club is there for those student athletes and provides them with this place.
