At the New York City UBS Arena, the 42nd MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) took the world by storm. Between Ariana Grande’s comeback to the VMA stage and Mariah Carey’s captivating performance, audiences were left satisfied.
Making sure they looked their best on the red carpet, celebrities went all out with their stylish outfits and accessories. Sabrina Carpenter came rocking a scarlet red long-sleeved gown, almost blending into the VMA red carpet itself. Not to mention Doja Cat, a pop-rap icon known for her unique outfits, strutted a colorful diamond pattern that represents classic 80s charm.
These outfits left Pembroke Pines Charter High School sophomore Huda Iqbal obsessing over it, “I really loved Doja Cat’s look. I thought it was very unique.”
There was a large variety of performances, leaving a long-lasting impression on fans. Performing his song “Vodka Canberry,” Conan Gray gave the crowd an entire stage production that referenced Romeo and Juliet. Tate McRae had viewers glued to their screens while executing impressive dance moves and singing her hit songs, “Revolving Door” and “Sports Car.”
The VMAs are known for their wide variety of awards. There’s always discourse about who will win what, but with many emerging artists this year, the anticipation for the winner of Best New Artist was nerve-wracking for viewers. Previous winners, like Chappell Roan and Ice Spice, certainly raised the bar, leaving the public with high expectations.
Alex Warren won the award for his hit song “Ordinary,” which has made its way to No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 10 weeks.
Warren, though, is not the only new talent. Katseye, a girl group coming off a year since their debut, won the ‘MTV Push Performance of the Year’ award for their song “Touch.” The award is meant to highlight emerging artists and their breakout performances.
Other unforgettable moments are Mariah Carey winning her first-ever VMA awards: ‘R&B Video 2025,’ and ‘Michael Jackson Video Vanguard 2025’ for her song, ‘Type Dangerous.’
Although most people were satisfied with the VMA night, a portion of the audience was left slightly disappointed due to some performances being underwhelming.
Sophomore Jade Irons says, “I didn’t like much of the performances, especially Sombr’s. It was like he was shrieking into the microphone.”
The VMAs were a night to remember. Whether it was the fashionable outfits or memorable performances, it left fans anticipating what to expect next year.
