When school is off for two entire months during the summer break, students often resort to vacationing, sleeping, or hanging out with friends. Netflix had other plans: keep everyone glued to their screens. People eagerly stayed inside their homes to binge-watch the most popular films of the summer.
Kpop Demon Hunters:
After seven years of constant production, the movie Kpop Demon Hunters arose from Sony Pictures Animation. At first, people overlooked the movie for its title, but after clicking play, they were hooked. With its astonishing visuals, catchy songs, and intriguing plot, Kpop Demon Hunters has broken countless records for Netflix.
With over 350 million views since its release, the film has grossed over $1 million, leaving a long-lasting impression on its audiences. Fans are happily entertained with content, with the movie’s arrival in theaters surpassing $18 million over just a single weekend.
Pembroke Pines Charter High School (PPCHS) sophomore Shriya Sardesai exclaims, “When I first heard of the movie, I was skeptical because I don’t listen to K-pop, and it seemed like a boring kids’ movie, but then I heard people saying they loved it. I didn’t like it at first until I rewatched it with my little brother and ended up loving it.”
Squid Games Season 3: The final game
Following its successful second season in December 2024, the final season of Squid Games was aired in June, leaving fans sobbing, stunned, and filled with suspense. The season achieved a record-breaking viewership of 106.3 million views in the first two weeks.
Lee Jung-jae continued his role as Seong Gi-hun, who was once a poor single father trying to pay off his debts to a much richer man, determined to end the games. The show wrapped up without many stones left unturned, but it does allude to a separate spin-off: an American version of the Squid Games.
“I’m glad it ended,” says sophomore Amelie Barnett. “I don’t want it to become overwhelming or overrated. The show was good. Not the best, but I liked how it kept you on your feet. I will miss the games and how interesting it was.”
Happy Gilmore 2: Just one more putt
After nearly three decades, Happy Gilmore has made a return. The film accumulated 46.7 million views in the first few days after its release and made its way to the number one spot on Netflix’s top 10 list. Adam Sandler has reprised his role as Happy Gilmore for the movie.
“I liked the second movie better because it was fun seeing all the new people and actors who joined, like Bad Bunny, or the dude who plays Ethan Gallagher,” responds Sanjana Balla, a junior.
The film contains many notable celebrity guest stars like Travis Kelce, Ben Stiller, Post Malone, and John Daly. They all tied the movie together, making it more intriguing to watch. This year’s film industry is making its way to becoming an era of sensational dialogue, characters, and emotional resonance that will leave the audience wanting more.
Whether it’s crying into your popcorn bucket over Squid Games or signing up for singing lessons after K-pop Demon Hunters, Netflix will want to leave its audiences satisfied.
