For 10 years, the National English Honor Society (NEHS) has thrived at Charter through literary content, meetings, and events. These include their annual Poetry Slam and Recite Night and their tradition of Poem-in-Your-Pocket Day.
As recognized by the Academy of American Poets, Poem-in-Your-Pocket Day falls each year during April, National Poetry Month. This year, it fell on April 10th, when NEHS members distributed over 600 poems to students around campus.
This event took weeks of preparations and started with “Ms. Phelps putting a poem in each of the teachers’ mailboxes in the office,” explains senior NEHS President Sofia Peralta. She further reveals, “NEHS members, or anyone in general, can pick up a paper bag of poems themselves so that they can hand out the poems throughout the day.”
The outcome of this tradition was a huge success because “we doubled the number of poems in one day since we had twenty people show up and scroll poems,” NEHS Advisor and English teacher Sarah Phelps exclaims.
For next year, NEHS encourages students to stay connected with the club and enjoy the beauty of any written word.
