Minecraft, the heart of everyone’s childhood, has been revived. The video game sensation has been crafted into a blockbuster film, generating a sense of nostalgia for all players. As a die-hard Minecraft fan, here are my thoughts on the film.
After receiving mass public criticism regarding the cast and live-action over animation, I was skeptical about the movie. I would’ve preferred it to be an animated style, similar to Minecraft Story Mode. However, after watching it, I found that the film exceeded all my expectations.
Introducing Minecraft icons Steve and his loyal companion, Dennis, the famous duo were met by the main antagonist, Malgosha. Malgosha was sinister; however, Minecraft’s most feared entity, Herobrine, should’ve been the villain. It was a missed opportunity to expand his lore and the perfect gateway to capturing the essence of Minecraft.
However, during Henry’s fight against the enderman at the Woodland mansion, his mind flashed to images of each character with glowing purple eyes, except Steve’s, which were white. Maybe this is a hint at a second movie with Herobrine as the villain, and considering the post-credit teaser of Alex, this is possible.
The audience is then met by Garret Garrison, or Garbage Man, a former video-game champion. His humor, motivated by his egotistical personality, hilarious mannerisms, and self-proclaimed bilingualism made him one of my personal favorite characters. Although he was self-centered, his development turned him into an admirable hero.
During Garrison’s auction scene, my favorite childhood Minecraft YouTubers, LDShadowLady, Aphmau, and DanTDM, made a remarkable cameo, allowing me to reminisce on bittersweet memories.
After finding the orb and Earth cube in Steve’s belongings, Natalie, Garrison, Dawn, and Henry ventured into the Minecraft overworld. They were immediately faced with their first challenge: surviving the first night. Battling deadly mobs is a rite of passage for every player, so it was thrilling to see it in a realistic scenario.
After encountering Steve, the crew made their way to Midpoint Village in search of materials. While roaming the village, they encountered a pig wearing a crown. This easter egg was a touching tribute to Minecraft icon Technoblade. I felt a heartwarming sensation as this moment brought the Minecraft community together to honor the life of a legend.
While gathering materials for their plan, the village was ambushed by a Piglin raid. Frantically trying to escape using the elytra wings, Steve and Garret spewed a series of hilarious lines and flirtatious actions that left me suspicious of their friendship.
At the woodland mansion, Garrison and Steve’s entertaining distraction was unsatisfactory for the Illagers, so they sent them in the ring to battle against Minecraft’s most lethal mob. The internet sensation, Chicken-jockey, left my family and me dying of laughter, as the iconic meme gained its well-deserved recognition.
The highlight of the final battle scene was the defeat of the Great Hog. Hopefully, the swiftness golem will be added to the game on both Java and Bedrock editions, as it will be a great defense mechanism against mobs.
In my eyes, Henry embodied the idea of Minecraft, using his innovative invention of the tater tot launcher and his creativity to fight against the enemy.
Each character got to fulfill their passions in the bittersweet ending. I left the theater with a smile on my face, ready to hop back on Minecraft for my upcoming two-week phase.
