Trump Address to Congress
On March 4, President Trump gave an hour and 40 minute speech to Congress for the first time since coming into office. During the speech, President Trump touched on different executive orders he had passed, along with how Congress could support his agenda.
One key moment during the speech was when Democrat Congressman Al Green of Texas stood up and shouted in protest near the beginning of President Trump’s speech. House Speaker Mike Johnson warned Green to be quiet and sit, but as Green continued the House Speaker had him removed from the chamber.
Other Democrats protested by leaving the chamber during the speech, holding signs, and not standing or clapping.
Trump’s heated clash with Zelensky
On Feb. 28, what was supposed to be a meeting between President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine and US officials to sign a mineral deal quickly turned south after President Trump and Vice President Vance got into a heated argument with Zelensky.
The first 40 minutes were going smoothly as both presidents took questions from the press about the mineral deal and the war. However, after Trump avoided directly stating that the US would guarantee security for Ukraine against Russia and Vance, adding on that “the path to peace and prosperity is engaging in diplomacy,” the world leaders started arguing about diplomacy and Zelensky’s willingness to stop the war.
After the meeting, Trump canceled the news conference and asked Zelensky to leave the White House. The Ukrainian president left without signing the mineral deal. As of now, both President Zelensky and President Vladimir Putin support having peace, with certain conditions.
SpaceX explosion
Starship, the world’s biggest rocket, exploded soon after it took off from Starbase in Texas. According to SpaceX, after the launch the spaceship lost many engines, resulting in a loss of altitude control and communication. The debris of the rocket could be seen falling by the Bahamas and Florida in an orange and yellow glow.
This caused the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to put out a warning to slow down any airplanes near where the debris was falling, delaying flights. This spacecraft, Starship, was the world’s largest and most powerful launch vehicle that was designed to transport humans and cargo to Mars.
DeSantis wants to repeal red flag laws
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis recently stated that he wants to repeal Florida’s red flag law, stating it infringes on gun owners’ Second Amendment rights. The red flag law allows law enforcement to confiscate firearms from people who are considered a threat to themselves or to the general public, while also preventing them from buying firearms in the future. The law also makes it so the legal age to own a gun is 21.
DeSantis argues that, “[It’s] not the way due process works,” stating that people have to prove to the courts that they are not guilty, which is the opposite of due process. As of now, 10,000 risk protection order petitions have been filed by law enforcement across the state.
