Cheating is a sin a lot of schools always have problems with. Teachers are paying more attention to see if students are doing it or not. As we know, some schools will lockdown certain websites to prevent cheating.
Being in the student’s shoes and knowing what they are going through, the pressure is immense. Now, there is never validating cheating, but there needs to be understanding of why students feel the need to.
Students cheating on any type of schoolwork, a test, quiz, an assignment might be more common than some people think. About 70% of students in high school have admitted to serving malpractice on an assignment. 60 years ago, only 20% of students admitted to cheating.
Why is there 50% difference from then to today? College to many parents should be the same as today, right? Well, no. Today, college is more of an expectation for kids graduating from high school and this doesn’t come without competition. The pressure of getting to a university is the reason why more and more students feel the need to plagiarize.
It can be very stressful to do wrongdoing on any assignment. “You might just want to get through the work so you can have time for yourself,” senior Rafael Larco says. Teens don’t want to be shoved with work. Overloading them can be draining and also tempt them to cheat.
Feeling pressure to cheat can sometimes take over a student and be overwhelming to the point where they just do it. Now, some students like senior Ayden Pardo try to eliminate the temptation. “My morals did hold out and my core values did show and said to not cheat.” Pardo says.
Cheating never works in the end. Doing any sort of wrongdoing doesn’t work out in the end. If there is any pressure to cheat, try not to and listen to the teachers who are supporting you. It might seem hard now, but it will eventually help you out for the future.
Teachers know the pressure that students are going through because they have been through it themselves. “Some teachers do actually understand what we are going through,” senior Shawn Zacariah says, “However, some will give lots of work that students probably can’t keep up with.” Teachers will do this sometimes, but it is all to help you manage your time because you will need this skill.
A simple, clear message for students is to not cheat. However, teachers or parents must recognize why they do it in the first place and show different ways on how to do things the right way. If we don’t the problem will not go away.
