There are many ways to express love on Valentine’s Day, especially on Pembroke Pines Charter High School’s lively campus. Although the holiday was is only on one day, Jags are listening to much lovelier, passionate tunes. Regardless if these songs are dedicated to close friends, family, partners, or students themselves, they provide a warm sentiment in the warm month of February. Here are just a few of the songs students go through on Valentine’s Day:
“Best part” by Daniel Caesar
“It’s very much about the other person—about the comfort they bring you. I think the rhythm of the song is very calming but sweet. It’s very representative of the lyrics. I found out about this song in 2019. I was listening to a rendition of it, and I just thought it would be really nice. My favorite lyric is: ‘Where you go, I fall, no matter how far you go.’ [My girlfriend and I have] been together for three months. I think it reflects our relationship. I also like the chorus, ‘If life was a movie, then you’re the best part.’ I feel like that’s already a meaningful [chorus].”

“While you were sleeping” by Laufey
“Throughout the song, it just says, ‘I don’t recognize myself.’ That’s true because, when you’re in love with someone, you become somebody else. When her album came out, I just listened to the whole thing and this song became my favorite. This song just reminds me to love myself. I believe that you can’t love other people if you don’t love yourself first.”
–Gianna Medina, sophomore
“All Mine” by Brent Faiyaz
I love this song because one, I like the artist, and two, it’s for someone special. I won’t name them but they come to mind when I listen to it. I started listening to Brent Faiyaz last year, and that’s when I came across this song. I found this song, and I really liked it. All the lines are good. I don’t have a favorite line because the whole song is great. I would definitely have it in the background at a fancy dinner date.”
–Jade Scott, sophomore
“Heart to Heart” by Mac Demarco
“Mac Demarco just expresses it so ‘heart to heart.’ It makes sense because during Valentine’s day, if you don’t have a Valentine’s, you have yourself to love. That’s why it’s really special to me. It kind of sucks because most songs are about their lovers, but I think you could relate it to loving yourself. Regardless, I just find these songs really lovely and sweet.”
–Maylia McLean, freshman
“A Teenager’s Romance” by Ricky Nelson
“It’s a really cute song. It stands out to me because I’ve always really liked vintage music. I’ve been listening to it for a couple of years and it’s constantly stuck in my head. I found out about it during quarantine listening to older music while working. I’m in a relationship now, so I relate to it in a way. The song represents more of what I was looking for later in life, in terms of love. A lot of it talks about how love may not be approved of by the people around you, but you can still work through it. I would play it at my wedding.”
–Elyse Temes, senior
“Each Time You Fall in Love” by Cigarettes After Sex
“It’s very powerful. I like the way it sounds and the melody. It portrays love in many different ways. One lyric that sticks out to me is: ‘Each time you kiss a girl, you never know what it’s worth.’ What it means is that people play around and they think they’ve found love each time, but it’s never really true love. I think it relates to the idea that I haven’t really found that true love yet.”
