High school. Four years of learning and growth. Four years can transform a person into who they are and will be in the future. Ashley Hoadley, a senior at Charter, took these past four years to mold herself into an accomplished student and a compassionate leader at heart. Through the long hours of studying, volunteer trips she coordinated, and leading other peers, it is with great pride that Charter can call Ashley Hoadley their nominee for the general scholarship Silver Knight award.
With a Silver Knight nomination comes the idea that this may have been the goal Hoadley had in mind since freshman year. On the contrary, she was simply trying to pass by in her classes and do what she could. Once she began to challenge herself with AP (Advanced Placement) and AICE (Advanced International Certificate of Education) classes, Hoadley began to notice a change in her character.
Even though she had trouble balancing not only academics but also extracurriculars she saw it as a way to better herself. “I’ve struggled to balance academics with extracurricular responsibilities. However, those experiences taught me how to manage my time and stay focused.”
Aside from academics, Hoadley makes sure that she provides herself with a well-rounded view on life around the world. She has been recognized for her extracurriculars through a Jag Pride award, the Superintendent’s Advanced Placement Studio Art Exhibition, and placement in HOSA competitions. But, what she holds dear to her heart is the club she made: Costa Rica Aid Alliance (CRAA).
Her grandmother, a person Hoadley holds extremely close to her heart, inspired her to make a change in the world around her. Through her grandmother’s love for her home country, Hoadley opened up her heart and extended her hands to her country: Costa Rica.
“My family has been my biggest source of support, especially my grandmother, whose stories inspired me to start CRAA.” Hoadley reflects on how this became not only the most significant project in her teen years but what changed her character the most.
Through planning trips to repair schools, Hoadley provides a sense of community for the Costa Rican students while also raising money to benefit their personal lives. During spring break last year, her and 14 other volunteers built a playground for the children, painted the school, and delivered school supplies. What makes this so distinctive is the smiles and pure love that was delivered alongside those donations.
“Seeing the children’s faces light up as they played on the new playground equipment was incredibly rewarding. It made me realize that leadership isn’t just about taking charge; it’s about inspiring others to work together toward a common goal.”
As for her application process regarding the Silver Knight General Scholarship, Hoadley put her all in. She allowed herself to reflect on either the hardest of times and the best of them. Looking through the determination she displayed in her academics and work throughout the years, Ashley Hoadley was reminded of the woman she was forming for the years to come.
“I’ve learned that I am more resilient and capable than I once believed. These past four years have shown me that challenges can be overcome with determination and a willingness to grow.”
As students progress through high school and make a name for themselves, Hoadley is 5 months away from closing this chapter in her life. With graduation approaching and the new beginnings of college opening, Hoadley envisions a future in majoring in Biochemistry with a pre-clinical track to pursue her dream of becoming a pediatric doctor.
Hoadley will soon leave the halls of Charter and step out into the world, no matter what college she attends. But, what will remain is her passion and drive to become a better student and leader. With that being said, Charter will always be proud of our Silver Knight candidate.
