The Golden Globes debuted on Jan. 7th, not only kicking off the new year but also the start of award show season.
Nikki Glaser, the 2025 Golden Globes host, made history as the first female solo host for the ceremony. Her monologue, which was praised by fans all over the internet, made waves for her ability to make comedic, but not insensitive, jokes. She mentioned in her monologue actor Timothée Chalamet, actress Nicole Kidman, and Sean John Combs (P-Diddy).
Movies like Hack, The Brutalist, and Shōgun, were referred to frequently throughout the ceremony as they won the most awards in their respective categories. Emilia Perez, however, swept the ceremony with the most awards. It won “Best Musical or Comedy Motion Picture,” and its actors won “Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture,” “Director of a Motion Picture,” and many others.
Although Emilia Perez won multiple awards, many spoke about their dissent towards the situation, vocalizing that the film did not accurately portray the lives of Mexicans and called out Director Jacques Audiard’s insensitive comments regarding not educating himself about the Mexican culture and language.
Wicked also made headlines as it won the “Box Office Achievement” award—but didn’t take anything else home. The movie was the talk of the year as musical fans, fans of the Wizard of Oz, and Ariana Grande fans waited patiently for the three-hour film to come out. Erivo and Grande were both nominated for categories, but did not win.
Demi Moore, 62, won her first ever film award, “Female Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy Award,” for The Substance after entering the industry 45 years ago. She mentioned in her speech that she has always questioned entering the industry, but is grateful for, alas, winning an award.
Besides the ceremony, fashion statements were made all over. Cynthia Erivo dawned a black and silver Louis Vuitton dress, while Ariana Grande in a bejeweled yellowish vintage Givenchy dress. Other brands like Balenciaga, Dolce & Gabbana, and Erdem were seen on the red carpet. Zendaya also stunned in a burnt orange old Hollywood Glamour dress.
Speaking of Zendaya, her newest surprise left all in shock. A fan-recorded video was released of Zendaya showing a ring on her left ring finger to Amy Pascal. Fans were quick to announce their excitement as she unofficially announced her engagement to actor Tom Holland.
“When I found out that they got engaged, I was in complete shocked and happy. They are truly the best example of what the cycle of love is because through every up and down, they had stayed together through it all. They are true love and a powerful bounded couple,” states junior Maria Benedek. Although only sources and other entertainment networks have reported their engagement, neither Holland nor Zendaya have confirmed it.
This night surprised many with Wicked and Challengers not winning as many awards, but was a win for women and Tom Holland fans. The Golden Globes 2025 brought out a new beginning for the entertainment industry, but there is still much more to come.
