Typically, the annual Spotify Wrapped reveal is the talk of the town—a much-anticipated highlight of the spooky season. But in 2024, the year-end ritual fell flat, disappointing music fans across social media.
Many users took to social media to express their disappointment that the Spotify Wrapped data was not available until well into the new year, complaining that the delay robbed them of the opportunity to fully reflect on and share their musical journeys from the prior year.
Yet despite the lukewarm reception, students still couldn’t wait to boast about their Spotify stats—\from their most-played artists to their most questionable listening habits.
“I did not expect my top five at all. I was very upset about my Spotify wrapped because I got Drake as my number one artist. I felt literally disrespected, and I wanted to cry.” –Brianna Mendez, sophomore
“My opinion on the Spotify recap is positive; I like the genres that it gave me. I feel like they matched what I was listening to this year, especially my cultural side, since I’m Hispanic and Colombian. I got “Bachata rosa,” and I also got a bunch of other Hispanic genres [which] I have been listening to a lot this year, especially in October. That’s the month that it told me I was listening to the most, so it was really accurate, and I think it was good. I didn’t get anything that I didn’t really listen to.” – Santiago Bogotá, junior
“My top five artists were Billie Eilish, SZA, Melanie Martinez, Frank Ocean, and PartyNextDoor. I listened to Billie Ellish for 7,957 minutes, and I’m a part of her top 0.1% listeners worldwide. I mainly listened to R&B and pop, and I’d say my Spotify Wrapped was pretty accurate.” –Amariah Ayum, junior
“My top artists are Frank Ocean, Yeat, J.Cole, SZA, and Drake. My most listened to genre that Spotify gave me was reggae, which I listened to a little, but only really in the summer, so overall it’s not necessarily the genre I usually listen to.” – Gabby Jarvis, junior
“Lady Gaga was my number one, but besides my top five, I thought this year’s Spotify Wrapped was kind of boring. I think they’ve done a better job in past years, like it felt like I could’ve made it better myself.” –Gabriela Sarbello, senior
“My top artist was Childish Gambino, which wasn’t a surprise since I was listening to him 24/7 after his new album came out. I also went to his concert this year. He was my number one in 2016, 2017, and 2018, and then disappeared in terms of my top five artists. To me, Spotify Wrapped had less features this year compared to last year when it gave you a city, genres, and more. Dare I say Apple Replay was better than Spotify Wrapped this year? Apple Replay gave you a top 10 and your top artist per month, which is cool because you can see how your music taste is so different from winter and summer. I thought Spotify dropped the ball, but generally speaking, I love wrapped and seeing [my] music taste evolve.” – Mr. Jablonka, History teacher
